coated bearings

can anyone comment on how coatings on bearings affect clearance? can they be run tighter than usual?

In the past I was forced to use coated bearings and I hated it - the thickness was inconsistent, it would wear and sometimes even flake off. It made it impossible to trust your clearance numbers. As for your question, yes, I'd run them tighter.

Coated bearings for years in house used Techline Coating
Set the clearance you wanted then coated bearing.
Would end up adding .0003 per half.
