New Ford Cup engine

Post by Walline »

Don, Ford had the Wood brothers and Ricky Rudd on our S.T.A.R.S system, so we techs could ask question. The new Ford engine was brought up. Namely how they have been popping! They said the new motor has a larger bore to make room for the new valve spacing and larger valves. To meet the Cubic inch rule they shorted the stroke and that is why he thinks(mind you he is not an engine builder) is why they are breaking.(to much piston spped?) My question is how large where the cup bores? I wonder if this is a trend with all makes?

When I was there the bore was 4.155 max. I don't know if short stroke is a trend, but more rpm sure is - it's almost 1000 rpm more today. I'm sure whatever is breaking was pushed to the limit by this fact. I'll try to find out more.

I know on the R-452 block that they are using there are some issues with core wire, When those blocks first came out a few years ago there was a lot of problems as far as boring them and getting into the core wire. We had to send 3 blocks back cause we couldn't even go 4.125 with out getting into core wire. And there was a problem on some of them with lifter bore placment as well.
