Cylinder Bore Finish

Post by EngineTech1 »

Some questions for anyone with experience in this area, What type, or brand of profilometer is most commonly used for evaluating bore surface finish and how much effort do you expend to make sure you have a particular finish on your maximum effort engines? Also have you found manufacturers recommendations on bore finish to work best in most instances or have you found your own finishes that give better results?
And finally, which hone, and hone head type do you think gives superior results, for example Sunnen hones vs. Rottler or other brands and the traditional CK-10 style hone head or the newer diamond hone type setups?

Thanks in advance for any input.

There is already a post on this but here is what I put on the last post.
_______________________________________________________

When we bore the blocks we leave .006 to .008 install torque plate

412 stones to with in .0003 to .0005 in several steps as not to cause any heat in the cylinders

623 stones to finish size

C30C03 cork stone for 4 to 5 strokes seems to work well with all ring packages excapt the alky enginges we don't use the cork stone, Need all the oil retention you can get with alky.

We use the Sunnen 616 Cylinder King any of the Sunnen machines I feel are second to none as far as honing.

what we have found is that the thinner the ring package, and the lighter the tension (radial diam.) the more critical bore finish becomes.A stock motor with stock rings don't seem to have much trouble selling with just about any bore finish. A .8,.8.2mm ring package must have a very, very straight bore and a specific finish on that bore in order to make it work with the best results. Those finish will vary, depending on bore size and hardness.
The mititoyo SJ201 with the printer is a really good piece. The printer is really cool because it lets you "look" at what the finish really is.
Hope this answers some qestions for you.
