I have a couple of the adjustable taper compressors 4" and 4.125"and have never had any issues even with .043 rings, just need to get them set so the piston just has a little drag w/o the rings on.

I don't know about "best" but a tapered compressor beats a band compressor. Leakdown on the stand drops considerably with the use of a tapered compressor and the bores look better after running the engine.

I can`t understand how it could be other than when the band compressor were used, things got damaged and/or rings ended not in the position they suposed to be.

Exactly. I think the band compressor does not compress in a perfect circle causing the rings to be deformed somewhat.

The "best ring compressor" ?
I prefer a dedicated bore size tapered one
Next the adjustable tapered ones as long as you don't get stupid with the adjustment

There is nothing what so ever wrong with a "band type"
Either one,, the ratchet or the one with pliers if used properly

The "best one" is the one you are the most comfortable using that doesn't break rings when installing them
Used properly the rings are not going to care what you use & you are not going to deform them with any of the above unless you hang them going in or miss the ring grooves with the tapered ones & keep banging on the piston,,,,,,,,,

I agree with Mike for sure but I have 9 solid/tapered compressors from ARP, B&B, BMP, and Proform and they are well worth the money. If I need an odd size one I buy one close in undersize and bore it to size I need. Still have a band compressor but its a last resort for me.

i agree with mike. i've used a adjustable band compressor which has a built in taper. it is very easy to use and never hangs up even with .043 rings.

Which one are you using dirtracer5?

I have a few dedicated typical sizes that work well but am looking for something for the oddball stuff. I don't want to pay $50 bucks every time I'm messing with a different bore size.

I've been using this set from Gear Wrench. It works well. I purchased a larger ring for up to 4.60" bores. The locking pliers make it easy to use.

Using skinny rings, nothing beats tapered, bore specific.
However, I didn’t know tapered band compressors (as mentioned by dirtracer5) existed. Who sells that?
