Re: Kwik way bore mains

Post by agertz1 »

Using standard 2.750" mains and boring to 2.950" +/-. Kwik way boring bar diameter is 2.625" net. This leaves about .162" for tool extension and chips.
Why would I ? Sending out for boring mains is $350 and six week wait, +. Honing is $150. and 1-2 weeks. What if ?

Using the bell surface or the timing cover surface to mount your bar is no guarantee of squareness to the mainline, at all. How will you center the bar on the saddle only, scratch test it and bump the bar around until it looks good? Whomever line hones your block will want the bores to be not only in alignment but as close to the same diameter as possible. Line honing a block with 3 steel caps and 2 cast caps presents problems in itself. The best method is to line bore it to within .001"-.0015", then finish it on the line hone if you want a hone finish.

I can check perpendicularity with an indicator. Kwik Way centers on the bore.

Wrong machine for the job, sublet it to another shop with a line bore

This seems like one of those instances where it’s best not to ask any questions.

Ok, so no one has done this but everyone is sure it's a dumb idea.

There are many many things in life that intuitively seem like a bad idea, that don’t need to be proven to actually be a bad idea.
Like walking off a cliff.

Maybe it’s just my perception of how (in)tolerant the main line is of machining errors, but machining the main bore with a portable boring bar falls into the “bad idea I don’t need to prove is a bad idea” category.

Seems kind of strange the dedicated main line boring equipment goes about the operation in a completely different way, using machines at are much more rigid and robust....... than a portable cylinder boring bar stuck on the end of the block.

Make no mistake, I believe you will not be deterred in your desire to try it.
Which is my main reasoning for not making comments or asking questions.
I think it’s a bad idea........ but who am I to tell someone what they should or shouldn’t do?
