400 hp 350sbc rods

Post by cgarb »

Will a set of stock rods live in a 9.5-1 compression 350 with 400 hp? The rods have been reconditioned with arp bolt and shot peened. Plan to keep it under 6500.

I reconditioned them myself in the garage with a disc grinder and a chainsaw file. I feel like they came out nice.

Hope you are referring to cleaning up the side beams and deburring. I'm assuming re-honing after cycling the ARP's a few times. Wheel-a-brating would be different than shotpeening, but probably better than nothing. Probably be OK.

The mid 80's rods were the better one as they had more meat around the rods bolt and better beam design.

Then these pink rods should be worth at least 50hp!

My stock 1969 350 rods with stock bolts torqued a bit tighter than factory specs have seen 8500 rpm 2 times and 76-7800rpm many many times in a 12+ compression 350.

Stock rods are under rated ..
Keep it out of the death rattle area and things last and last.
OH and my pistons are cast..

I Here that the modern PM rods are superior for up to 500 HP applications? What says the group?

My son's WISSOTA limited dirt mod engine has PM rods… they are pretty popular in those cars.

Preignition will kill them , so i have heard.
Some hot sticky days here and back years ago a bunch of dirt cars went to them but did not stay with them.
I suppose if you can keep it in tune there should not be any issues.
I see a bunch of hypereutectic pistons broke in engines that are beat on.
Way more than the old cast 345np.or the zolner cast
I took some Hyper pistons and beat on them with a hammer.. beat the pistons off the rods is what i did, making piles of busted aluminum.
The hypereutectics broke easily with 1-3 hits and the parts would fly.
The old standard cast type would bend and bend and then break with a piece usually still holding on.usually 6-9 wacks and those were off the rods and pins could be beat out.
I was just having fun making recycle scrap that day.. and jugline weights from the rods.

Good testing I always use similar scientific testing approaches like this lol nothing like verification by repitition what kind of hammer was it ballpeen, claw, or sledge?

Well, I was fortunate enough to witness a fellow try and cut a core support out of a mustang with an axe once...lol. It was entertaining.

LOL!
Remember the rod testing ways.
Clamp rod in a big stout vise insert stout bar into rod and start twisting the rod into a spiral .
The stock forged rod will twist and twist. some other rods just twist a little then snap.
Maybe not scientific to most but it does give you an idea of the shock loads something can withstand or elasticity.

I have built many 7500rpm SBC's and all used stock rods.
Even a little 302 chevy with 285@.050 camshaft and 13:1 compression had stock rods but that got ARP bolts
also used the factory 302 crank and block. ported 461's... never failed.
