best liquid for volume measurement of cc
Guys,
just a simple question:
What kinds of liquid do you prefer for volume measurement of your CC or piston volume by using the burette ? I´ve sometimes troubles to get the cock of the buerette closed smoothly
once the CC is filled, it´s a feeling as the cock sticks maybe because I used methyl alcohol which doesn´t lubes the cock at all.
Best handling to avoid adhaesion of air bubbles to the sealing grease at the edges for instance ? Special grease experiences?
The liquid shouldn`t dissolve the sealing grease.
Your opinions would be appreciated !

We use alcohol mixed with some red machinist's dye, just enough to make reading the numbers easy!
Thanks, Gary in N.Y.
P.S. The petcock occasionally gets a very thin film of white lithium grease, works really well. We tried the "plastic" burettes years ago and found the "glass" was the only way to go!

I use water with a tiny drop of Dawn dish soap to break the surface tension.

WOW, alcohol in your parts washer, that`s pretty up town. You don`t mess around. No ugly film left on your parts.

Windshield washer fluid.
I used to be a people person, but people ruined it.
Re: best liquid for volume measurement of cc
Made me think back more than forty years ago to my first experience CCing combustion chambers. It was a SBF 302" and all eight chambers turned out pretty close and very little grinding needed.
Then, just for shits and giggles, I did the piston tops/TDC cylinder volume. There was quite a variation. Finally, I determined the C/C length on the connecting rods varied .005". Back then, I had neither the money nor the expertise to know how to correct that and the pistons were already hung on the rods.
Today, with most of you using aftermarket CNC machined heads, there shouldn't be any CC variation. Is the CCing just to verify what static compression you've actually built?

water. had a plastic burette for years, it is not affected by the water
people go on about meniscus etc but as long as you take the reading from the same place consistently i feel there is no issue.
