vortec 062 drop-in hydraulic roller valve springs

Post by Roadknee »

Looking for a recommendation for a good set of valve springs that won't require any machining to Vortec heads. Cam is Comp Xtreme 4x4, 260 @ 0.006, 210 @ 0.050, 131 @ 0.020 and 0.474" lift with 1.5 RR. Max engine speed is 5,500 rpm. I understand the spring seat ID of these heads is larger than the earlier OEM small block heads and will not accommodate the standard 1.25" OD spring with dampener. I measure the installed height of a set of 906's in my shop and they are slightly less than 1.700" Do the 062's run about the same as 906's? Thanks

Crane has a drop on spring retainer set.

You can also just remove the damper of a z28 type hi perf spring.. But with this you still must deal with retaner seal clearance at max lift.

Ghetto grind the bottom of oem vortec retainers..,,, Use a chrysler valve seal.

or shorten tge guide boss top..

or use gm LS-6 springs and comp 787-16 retainers. shim height for pressure. as required.

(verify retainer seal lift clearance too.
.)
These are not the limit of your choices.

how about .600 lift springs 1.250 od take out damper and check for coil bind and retainer hitting guides the ones i used had about 130/140 on the seat..

Run a bee hive upside down. Erson used to do it in the '70s when bee hives were called "conical". If I remember right Oldsmobile had them in the 60's maybe even '50's .

doesnt really solve the retainer to seal clearance that the 787's and beehives setup does

+.050 locks and 787's gets you right around 1.8 installed.
For your lift/rpm I'd think a set of non-ls6 (truck/car oem gen3) springs @ 1.75 (stock locks +787's) would do nicely.

Thanks Rizzle. Do the 787's increase installed height compared to stock retainers? Current installed height is less than 1.7" Also, do + 0.050" locks create a clearance issue with self aligning rocker arms?

The installed height is not the issue. Its the space between the bottom of the retainer and seal that limits valve lift travel.

Apparently Sealed Power valve seal # ST2015 (dodge) fits vortec heads and is shorter, allowing more valve lift
without milling down the valve guide boss. You can also grind a little bit off the bottom of a retainer to gain more lift.

If you increase the springs installed height you reduce the spring pressure unless you also shim up the spring seat.

K Motion spring # K-700 does fit right on stock vortec heads but they are CRAP. They BREAK real easy.
Not worth the dropped valve damage risk.

Here is some reference info on hot rodding with vortec heads.

If stock vortec installed is ~1.7ish, then yes, the 787's would seem to increase installed height. I never tried the +.050 locks, so i cannot speak for any interference with the S-A rockers. It was discussed when we measured the 1.75 I-H but the spring pressures and coil bind were still acceptable with stock locks. The website linked above claims 787s and +.050 locks cause interference with rockers.

I have used the blue GM springs with comp #787 retainers and +.050" locks with stock self aligning rockers on oem vortec heads.

I ran the LT4 hot cam springs in my street car with Vortec heads. Would pull to 6500 pretty easy. If the spring pocket does not have the lip in that area of the spring pad those springs will drop right in, at least they did on my heads.
