Re: Keeping aluminum from sticking to carbide burrs
I didn't know about WD40, nor imagined to be so popular for this use. I'll try next time. The WD-40 company needs to update this list though: http://wd40.com/files/wd40-2000.pdf
I have used candle wax for a long time, considerably successful. I'm no pro, just a stubborn enthusiast.
Here's a funny story... when fitting a vintage Hilborn injector on my SBC400, I realized some last minute grinding was needed. So I get my Makita GE0600 die grinder (love it!), the right carbide burrs (SGS brand), but can't find my "shop candles"... so I dig into wife's Christmas decorations and get one of those big diameter table candles. So I got my job done, carving a hole in the bottom of the candle, then I put it back in the candle holder, like that never happened. Had she found that out, our divorce would haven been anticipated!

"Re purposing" household items can be hazardous! My wife came home early once and found my 100 lb.+ Vincent V-twin engine in the oven, warming up for the installation of the cam spindles. The final straw was finding the spindles in the freezer... (Oh yeah: And then I dropped it on the vinyl floor, permanently imprinting same with the cylinder fins... )

Accu-lube 79037 and it is green/eco friendly, keeps burrs from getting clogged up and works on sanding rolls and flap wheels.

Thanks guys. If I'm having a home cooked meal at some gear head's house and the food tastes like gasoline and machining oil, I'll know what happened.

By far better then WD-40.

I have been using this stuff on my mills in MQL mode. Bee's Knees and all that.

Decided to try it while carving some alum heads the other day. Squirt a little on the burr. Was happy to find it work beyond expectations there also.

How about if you pass it through your kidneys first?

Bill, I'm not sure I'd like to work on a head after taking a wee in it..MadBill wrote:How about if you pass it through your kidneys first?
But seriously. Alcohols are severely underrated as cutting fluids when you work on aluminium. Try it and become a convert. It leaves no residue either. And you'll be a bit tipsy...
