intake manifold for 400 Chevy ?
I'm wondering about an intake manifold for a mild 406 engine. Max rpm is 5800-6000.
The engine has Dart Sportsman II iron heads and 225/231 Hydraulic roller camshaft with 112 lsa and 570/580 lift.
And will be in front of an automatic transmission with 2500 stall breakaway converter.
It will be used mostly on the streets. town & highway with a little strip duty.
I have two intake manifolds and i'm hoping to use either one of them, One is Performer EPS and the other one is a Victor Jr.
Would i be leaving to much bottom end with the single plane and vice versa (top end) with the dual plane ?

Run the DP with a 750 cfm carb and don't look back!

I personally like the Vic jr better for your combo. I ran one with a 750 dp , Dart 215 Iron Eagles, Eddy RPM cam on a stock bore 350 with flat tops and the same converter. Ran real nice. No loss of bottom end that everyone rants about. Strictly street drove and I ran the snot out of it.
Everyone appreciates your honesty , until you're honest with them , then you're an @$$hole.

If you have a 6000 rpm max I would use the dual plane. You wont be losing anything.

400 SBC here.
Hunt up an old Weiand Stealth 8016 Dual Plane and go!
Look it over and even though it is "Old-School", it has the largest plenum and runners of all the dual planes that I know of.
Now for probably up to a 377 to 383, the old Holley 300-36 true high-rise is fine!!
As always, jmho, and I have a new still in the box 300-36 in my closet.

They have been bowl blended and the guides have been thinned down. They are also matched to a 1205 gasketCarnut1 wrote:Stock sportsmans?

Just curious, have any of the respondents here ever track tested or dyno tested your suggestions?

Is this the 11" breakaway? what gear are you running and how heavy is the car?Monza355 wrote:I'm wondering about an intake manifold for a mild 406 engine. Max rpm is 5800-6000.

Use the good OLD 67-69 302 Z-28 Intake. Great dual plane for the street.

My suggestion is try both and see which one you like best I am thinking the victor jr will win because of the cubic inches offsetting the low end loss and helping substantially up top.But since you already have both intakes not that hard to find out.

Do not fret over leaving 5 hp on the table with a DP intake , your average power numbers will be better and that will get the car up to whatever top end it has FASTER, period!

I don't want to highjack, but I've got a similar question. The OP mentions the EPS. For his combo, would there be any significant power difference between the performer, EPS, RPM, and RPM air-gap, or will they all run pretty close? I've never understood why Edelbrock has so many SBC dual plane manifolds.
