Lucas break in oil?
Anyone using the Lucas 30W Break In oil? Application is a SBC, aggressive 'dwell' style lobe cast nitrided flat tappet, tool steel lifters, spring pres. is 220 seat/420 open. Motor will see dyno time for cam break in with light springs, then change to the race springs.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Lucas stuff will not fail you, that being said, so will GM additive!
Either with light springs for break in should end in smiles!

Have never used the Lucas but sure it would be fine. I prefer the Amsoil Break In Oil in all my engines.

break in oils are junk and not needed... pick a good oil stick with it.. look what 30,000 engines are started with... not break in oils. rings seat fine ... I love ls30 gibbs , and Mobil 1 5-30. mix of 10-30 and 20-50 vr1 in turbo cars ...
Re: Lucas break in oil?
We have used lucas break in oil in some flat tappet solid lifter circle track motors with good results. They were all below .650 lift.
Re: Lucas break in oil?
You obviously have not run any dwell nose flat tappet cams, with 420# on the nose.hereinmissoula wrote: ↑Sat Jun 18, 2016 9:35 am break in oils are junk and not needed... pick a good oil stick with it.. look what 30,000 engines are started with... not break in oils. rings seat fine ... This isn't some stock hydraulic flat tappet cam with 90# on the seat, and 250# at max lift.
A Low Zinc/High deturgent oil would be disaster in this application.

I have seen too many perfectly good builds go for a shit cause the customer cheaped out on the break in oil thinking it was just advertising hype and just plain bullshit. Till they loose a $500 cam in the 1st 10 minutes then they call and ask what was that oil you recommended to use when they come in the following week looking for a cam for a buddy that was the same as what he had knowing full well he lost the cam on start up for not using the correct oil.
And really when you think about it additives are not fully blended with the base oil till it runs for a while making the additive almost pointless in a fresh engine. Unlike the purpose blended oils for break in.
I know guys will say it works but like Mike mentioned you just have not had a big enough stick combo yet to see why it don't.

Re: Lucas break in oil?
at what point (presumably a spring lb value over the nose) do people normally recommend light running in springs?
Re: Lucas break in oil?
I don't recommend breaking in a cam with over 300lbs of spring pressure at Max lift

I have been having awesome results with flat tappets using driven BR oiltenxal wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2016 8:33 am Anyone using the Lucas 30W Break In oil? Last Cleveland I did had 340lb open and after 40 min break in I pulled the lifters for inspection and they looked like they were brand new
I also notice much less fine metal particles after run in using Driven break oil

Driven BR30 is what I ended up using...and what I've used in the past. Good stuff, for sure.
