Camshaft grinding wheel supplier?

Post by SchmidtMotorWorks »

Does anyone know of a camshaft grinding wheel supplier?

Goodson has been back ordered for months.
Radiac doesn't sell to individuals anymore.

When we find a policy such as this, our next question is, "Then from whom may we purchase Radiac products?" Make sure you ask for at least a couple of their customers and preferably in your geographic area.

Another FWIW, we recently bought pistons and rings from an eBay seller. They were drop-shipped directly to us from manufacturers who don't sell direct. Go figure.

Norton industrial Abrasives catalog, Page 234 lists that 21"+ sized wheels are still being made. Couldn't hurt to give them a call.

Radiac says, "call Goodson and they will place a special order to us".

The problem with this is, it doesn't give me anyone with inside knowledge of grinding wheel to aid in selection for specific metals and trouble shooting.

I have some other leads in progress now, I will post the info up if it pans out.

It is troubling when the most willing and knowledgeable person to get involved is in Korea.
On the other hand, the very best carbide end mills that I have found are made in Korea, if the grinding wheels are half that good, I will be very happy.

I have made several attempts through their web site to get assistance but no replies so far. I guess that they are looking for large grinding focused companies.

Might try Tennessee Abrasives.
I have used some of their stones before and they do show some grinding wheels on the website.

Working with Research Abrasive
Ken Dixon Jr.

By far the most knowledgeable person I have discussed grinding wheels with.
Only interested in selling to applications that are a good fit with his technology.

The rest have been catalog readers that have no idea what they are talking about.

Let me know what you find out.
The US grinding wheel industry is a joke right now.

The US grinding wheel industry is a joke right now.
Research specializes in custom plastic bonded wheels.
They are widely used in production cam grinders both iron and steel (but different composition and speed).
Ken says that plastic bonded wheels are good for flat grinding but not recommended for form grinding or even corner radii such as crank grinding.

I ordered a custom composition wheel of Kens spec as a starting point and will tune from there.
I might be able to use this one wheel for both materials if I can tune the speed.

I am also looking into CBN wheels but can't find any good advice about selection or application tuning.
I have been told that they are intolerant to excessive load, so if you are roughing have a core with a lump on one lobe and you don't back-off far enough, a $7,000 CBN wheel can be wrecked by that (where other wheels might need redressing at worst).
I also have some doubts about truing a CBN wheel sitting on the spindle unused for extended times. I think they probably need to be left on the machine (no swapping wheels), ideally never turned off.
