All parts in, hp/tq estimates? Bullet soild 454 049 heads

Post by hereinmissoula »

Car is 65 Chevelle
approx 3800 lbs.
th400 3500 stall
12 bolt 3.55 gears

454
Stock crank and Rods SSP bolts
TRW L2349F Pistons (30cc dome i believe)
049 Heads lightly cleaned up and rebuilt, fresh valve job
Crane 99893 Valve springs , 1.7 Crane energizer rr's
Decked block (not sure how much, all receipt says is decked, assuming just enough to clean up)
Performer RPM
AED 950Ho carb
1 7/8 Headers / Full 3 inch Exhaust
Msd Pro Billet/6al2 Box
Compression should be around 10:1 From what i calculate. More if was zero decked. Threw them .0016 in hole for 10:1 number.

CHB 282/292-F110+5
Duration @ .050 = 248/255
Lift with 1.7 rockers = .570/.586
Lobe separation = 110
Intake centerline = 105

Will be chassis dynoing car soon, will post numbers...

I believe that those are UDHarold (Ultradyne) cam lobes.
Interesting to see how it does. Chassis dyno numbers can be humbling
if you don't pay attention to the little details to get it dialed in.

When you do your testing be sure to get your raw "uncorrected " power and torque numbers from the test runs as well as the "corrected test data"
You want to keep track of both data sets.

I would think in the neighborhood of 500-525 you could get an easy 50 Hp out of it by doing a little clean up in the pockets and intake ports

In the stock form you have those 049s in they flow enough to make 550 hp if you Cam lifts to that flow range, but I would say that with your compression and induction 525 will be more like the numbers seen!
With those poor flowing Exh ports at low lift be sure to back cut the Exh valves with a 32 degree angle to leave you wuth a .075" seat on the valve, in fact I would I would stuff in the 1.88" Exh valve with a 3 angle valve job and do a bowl blend job to get the throat bigger 1/16" just for the sake of getting stough low lift numbers.
You can cut a man's tongue from his mouth, but that does not mean he’s a liar, it just shows that you fear the truth he might speak about you!

Is the 500 hp estimates at the rear wheels?

Well mines almost identical other then bowl blended 219/188 10-1 with Jones 246/250 I wanted 550 or so and he said it should get there so if that helps any

No RW yes flywheel Hp and yes to the 1.88's. It wouldn't hurt to do bigger intakes too but minimal gains without a cam change. Don't forget about intake port maching. Also deck the block to zero for a tight quench of a .039 head gasket. Details add up they can make the difference of 560-580 +Hp instead of 515-525 Hp at little to no cost.

On the heads these mods will help mid lift that no body thinks about the valve spends a fraction on time at peak lift the range in-between is where the majority of the time flowing into the cylinders. Help the mid lift and help the curve across the band. Higher over all average is faster than a higher peak for a street build.

I would guess maximum somewhere between 370HP and 400HP at the tyres, torque ...cant remember

based on my old 454, 12.2 to 1 comp, Solid flat tappet 252/258@50 on 106 with about 600 lift, rpm air gap, very well ported 049 oval ports,850 annular demon carb, hooker 2 inch primaries, twin 3 inch exhaust with hookers and bullet mufflers still hooked up, powerglide with 10 inch 3500 stall and 3.89 gears with 26.5inch tyres

I just got 400whp out of a 406 Sbc w afr 195's only 230@.050 . Behind a 200r4 3500 stall and a Dana 60. Thought I would get more with this .

Have you actually measured/mapped out the time a valve spends where?

On one I mapped that had a net (actual measured) peak lift of .705" the valve spent 26 crank deg above .700"lift.
It had a duration at .050" of 258*.
So the valve spent 10% of it's .050" duration time in the top 1% of the lift.
I don't consider 10% of the valve open time, a fraction of time, (or at least it's an important fraction of time) and that 10% is when the piston is at a high speed.

I want my ports good during that 10%.

Its terminology could have been worded different saying the majority but read the whole statement and look for the words street build. and .705 may not be the average street build that a street rodder wants power from 2500-6500 RPM's so I would rather have 510 average ft lbs torque and 515 average Hp than 25-50 lbs lower average #'s sacraficed for a high peak#. In a drag only application you are correct where you are running a 5500 stall shifting at 7200 the peak trumps average as this guy's components and cam says that he is doing a street toy engine.

Typically, the highest flow demand (a few degrees after max piston speed, perhaps 78-80°) is at ~ 85% of max intake lift. By ICL, say 105°, the flow rate is dropping off...

049 heads will support 600 horsepower if done right. Bigger valves, good bowl job, 3 angle valve cut, port match intake. I liked the 1973 cast date heads, best exhaust runner size. BB Chevy factory heads didnt have good exhaust flow.
