55MM cam core VS. roller lifter wheel

Post by swampbuggy »

55mm S.B.C. camshaft core with a 1.275" base circle. What diameter wheel would typically be mated with this size base circle ? . 904" w/.810" , .937" w/ .850" or something bigger ?

If anything, the roller diameter is less critcal with a bigger base circle. That said, yes, bigger is better.

In support of the previous replies, the largest base circle diameter and roller wheel that is physically possible. One of the biggest problems with designing cam profiles is dealing with limitations. Larger base circle diameters and roller wheels help with this. Larger diameter tappet faces also help with designing flat tappet cam profiles.

I believe CamKing told me that you can't open the bores up to .904 on a Gen 1, SBC without a custom cam core or something like that. I can't remember exactly what it was.

Thanks for the input folks. For the record the block is a Dart Iorn Eagle with the camshaft raised .391". This will be a high end build. The Iron Eagle block will accept a 55 mm roller bearing (MAX.) OR a 60 mm babbit bearing cam core (MAX.) .
