Rotating assembly

Post by runawy9 »

Upgrading my 385 sbc this winter. Going to 3.875 stroke and 4.125 bore.
My question is about the rotating assembly.
Which one: Scat, Manley, or howards crank?
Scat or compstar h beam rods?
Howards or CP pistons?
They are all around the same price. Is any one better than the other?
This will be a pump gas motor driven on the street. Hoping for 670-690 hp.
Will also see some nitrous at the track.

With the compstar h-beam for 2.00 rods jornals; will clear standard base circle cam with 3.875 stroke. Have had good luck with their rods.

I have had good luck with the Mahle pistons I am using now.
I can't find them in 2618 material for my application and don't want to use the 4032.
The CP pistons look nice.

I recently purchased this short block from Competition Products http://www.competitionproducts.com/Dart ... VdI0zWCgts. The pistons are Ross. I had to pull 4 piston and rod assemblies to clearance for a standard base circle .640" lift Howards solid roller cam. The deck clearance is .025". The Dart block is going to need an oil pan with room at the rails for the wide main caps. I ran the numbers and did the math, and bought separately with my shop of choice doing the machine work, I figure I came out $800 or more ahead by buying it assembled. It's pretty good deal, but if I did it again I would try to get something done about the deck clearance issue. With a .027" gasket, my quench comes out to .052"
So much to do, so little time...

I already have the block. It was done by Carl Hinkson. Very happy with it.
Old rotating assembly was Mahle pistons, Howards rods and compstar crank.
Was wanting personal experience from others on different brands.
