what typically goes on 5.3 first

Post by cv67 »

02 Silverado 180k
Recently on startup hear bad clacking from valvetrain somewhere
Quieter last week but doesnt sound good

dumped oil the other night was glittery and pieces of bearing.
Been pretty reliable but led a hard life hoping to limp it along but glitter isnt good

Camshaft, lifter, or both. Seen quite a few of those around that mileage.

Usually a lifter goes first and takes the cam.

Oil pumps are also common. My local dealer says they sell 5-7 pumps a week.

Those are also known for breaking valve springs. Just saw a broken one today.

I've seen some bad wear on pushrods/rocker cups on some gen3 truck engines as well.

Oil pump pickup O-rings. They seem to fail at around the 250-300k mark. Get low oil pressure, like 20psi max.

Drop the pan, replace the #2 failure point (the oil pan gasket blowing out at the oil passages), replace the O-ring, and get good oil pressure again.

Of course if your oil pressure sender failed at 150k and you never bothered to replace it, you might not ever notice that your cold oil pressure is 20psi, and then you get glitter.

It could be any of the above, but if you now still have good ring seal and want to keep it that way while you still drive it ,put a magnetic drain plug in it and stick a big Ass magnet on the outside of the pan!

Yes. 12499225]
Thanks guess I better grab a set in case trust GM before aftermarket

No i never replaced the sender still flutters a little at idle

Idle hpt 40-42 psi but did notice when you give it gas isnt always consistent so who knows
Its let a hard life at least the first 60k mi

Changed oil all quiet probably the calm before the bang. Time to pull some valve covers guessing it goes deeeper than that
Never happens at a good time lol. Damn and just sold a perfectly good running 1 ton. Job market sucks...

Still cant find a complete rebuildable core for less than 800-1000
If I had a few more bux Id just get a block from Summit and start all over.

Yeah, the magnet won’t stick to the outside of the pan, you’d have to glue it on. But the fact that the pan is aluminium means the magnetism will go straight through the pan unaffected and attract ferrous particles to the inside surface of the pan. A magnet on the outside of a steel oil pan, depending on the pan’s thickness, has most of its magnetism sucked into the pan itself and only a bit goes into the oil to attract particles.
