Lifter link bar

Anybody know how the rivet on these link bar break off,and do you think I should change out the rest of them seeing how this one broke.

Only a guess: cam is moving back & forth slightly, taking the lifters with it. This movement is 'working' the rivets which eventually loosen....& you know the rest.

My guess is the roller failed first and took the link bar off.

Hmmm... I'd think it would be vice versa; the failed rivet allowed the lifter to turn sideways.

You could be correct, but I've had several failure like that and I was told the link was failing. Was I caught it soon enough, I figured out the roller was failing.

With that volume and kind of metal in the engine that engine has to come out for a complete tear down and clean up. Leaving that quantity of steel and hardened metal in that engine and continuing touse it will destroy what's still possibly good for reuse now!

I think those are some pretty cheezy looking rivets to begin with. Get good new lifters on a new cam and eliminate that breakage possibility. Don't care what brand those lifters were, those rivets are junk in my opinion.

Now on this type of failure would you expect the timing change to stretch to the point of kind of flopping around I just put that timing chain on around this time last year and now it's way out of shape.

How would a failing roller cause the link bar to pop apart?

I am kind of thinking that the rivet failed because as mentioned the link bar doesn't appear to be damaged. Meanwhile what is left of the ears on the bottom of the lifter are cracked apart like the roller was shoving on it sideways... as if the lifter had rotated.

Worn axle could just be a worn axle, after all. It happens with rollers...

i dont know crap, but looking at them lifters, that cam was walking back and forth.

A slightly cocked lifter bore causing a pull on the rivet or a slight angle on the lash ramp causing a twist to the lifter would fatigue the rive mount.
