Cam cap material and design

Post by John@RED »

Hello,
which material should I use to make some CNC cam caps? Normal aluminum or some special alloy?

And could I make the cam cap "track" as large as the cam cap, so not as in the following pics where is narrower than the cap?

I have thought about using normal 6061 for this and then honing for the surface finish.

Please keep us posted on how you go.

I ended up making them in 7075 aluminum.
Can I make the cam cap bearing surface as large as the cam cap, so not as in the following pics where it is narrower than the cap?

Is there plenty of room between the lobes? As long as oil can escape and the lobes are in clearance you should be fine. Any more pics? What engine is it for?

I don't know which engine are these for, as I was just asked to make new ones from this. Anyway I was told there is 0.125" room on both sides, so oil can escape.
I was just curious about the difference in oil flow and cam/cap wear with the larger bearing. Thanks

Curious on the problem being solved with cnc cap vs stock cap?

Hi, are cam caps in harder material like Ergal going to increase wear on camshafts?
Thanks

No. Ergal/7075 is ideal. The cam should not be contacting the cap if the lubrication is right.
