pump gas 427 sbc
Is it possible to build a pump gas 427 sbc that makes 700 hp N/A ? Without using exotic parts. Just plain stuff that anyone can order from a speed shop? I may be helping a friend build such a motor. We are looking at a Dart SHP 427 assembled short block with flat top pistons. Maybe around 11.5 CR and a solid roller. He already has a AFR composite race intake with a 4150 flange, an MSD crank trigger, Daytona sensors ignition box, 1.75" hooker headers, an 850 QFT carb and a real fancy moroso pan. What could we keep and what should we get rid of? What heads to use? Current motor is a 11-1 CR 383 with AFR 195 heads and a Hyd roller. Car is a 78 lemans, runs 10.80's with 4.56 gears and a turbo 350.

Re: pump gas 427 sbc
I have done such an engine several times--- no big deal for me-- pretty expensive though

Depending on the pistons valve relief, limits you to the head you have to use. In my opinion I would buy an sb2 top end and order your shortblock for those heads.
Or contact someone to build you a set of heads and matching intake for your application. And hopefully the valve reliefs are in the right spot, and deep enough. You will need a pretty large camshaft. In the 268-270@050 range.
But yes as Bigjoe1 mentioned it's possible as I've also done it numerous times. What do you consider exotic

have bigjoe do it, tuned dyno'ed ready to go, proven
Love to have him do one for me (dreams are for free lol)
If anyone can do it "with less" he can.....

Re: pump gas 427 sbc
If you go with dart shp block; look at the pro-shp; billet caps all 4 bolt, bbc cam tunnel and .904 lifters. Very good bang for your buck.

Re: pump gas 427 sbc
Did a 434 with afr 235's 11:1 ran on 92 small solid roller and 1000 HP carb went 132 @3400 10.1 off foot brake right off the trailer no tuning 28 degrees timing 1.47 60 ft 700 is very doable 12,000 carb to pan
Re: pump gas 427 sbc
As above, I'd go bigger on the carb. 1000+ CFM would lose you nothing on the bottom but gain from say 4,000 up, likely ~20 hp peak and more beyond.

Re: pump gas 427 sbc
Lots of good advice so far;
if it were me building this 427 I would opt for the AFR 245 heads and a slightly larger duration cam from Jones. I'm assuming this engine will spend most of its time on the strip??
My nephew went from a 210 to a 235 on a 427, and he wishes he bought the 245 heads. His application is strictly racing though.

Re: pump gas 427 sbc
I had a 427 sbc 3.875 stroke
Pump gas I used the same cam as Cam king mentioned but on 108.
I had AFR 245 heads and super vik2 1050 carb 4150.
In Fox body w 3.73 pg and 10" nos Converter.
Full interior went 9.90s
Same motor on q16 and loose 5500 motor Converter went 9.51@143
Went real good on NOS.
DROVE IT EVERYWHERE..
BEST 1/8TH MILE WAS 5.23@131 ON 85 JET BIG SHOT PLATE

Re: pump gas 427 sbc
He already has the 850 carb, and that'll handle over the 700hp goal he has.

Re: pump gas 427 sbc
A nicely modified 850 will be over 1100 CFM, and will help the torque and power through the whole usable RPM range. With a right calibration, the low speed characteristics will be good , too. 700HP consumes roughly 900CFM+, so an unmodified 850 would be a little small.
