A lot of Diesel trucks up North in Alberta on the Oil Patch idle a lot. They have a very high engine on time to mileage.

I bought one that was over 10k hrs with 500k kms. But the price was right.

Some of the new heavy machinery is not designed to be idled all night, as some machines are in extreme cold weather, to keep them safe, and ensure startup in the morn. A few ended up calfing the engines.

On a diesel, idling for long periods can give you poor cylinder combustion where the cylinder temps are too low. Below 300f is poor as far as I can tell.

The unburned fuel can wash down the cylinder walls.

Probably the best solution to determine wear, if you are concerned, is to do a compression test.

When I was doing agriculture and oil field stationary engines in the 70/80 the standard was 47 miles/hour.
Those engines were on the governor most of their running life.
