Since the lifter really needs to follow the cam profile, while not as close in area in all places this is more of what may work.

You don't need the same area, because the area in the higher lifts are not usually worth that much more in flow.
If the port flow's about the same between .500" lift and .650", a .650" lift cam that's got 100 degrees of duration @.500: lift, if not going to have much of a performance gain over a .550" lift dwell cam, that has 100 degrees of duration @.500" lift
