Thanks for the pics Craig. In a lightweight LJ, that would be a handful! I admire the work and thinking that goes into hotrod builds like these, especially where aftermarket support is limited.
Regards
Paul
Cheers Paul, yes its a good fun little thing to drive for sure.
Here is a pic pre teardown for block and piston replacement. I did not do the original engine bay fit up, that was all done by Scott who is/was a friend of the owner , Scott unfortunately passed due to Leukemia a few years ago. He did a good job of getting this package under the stock LJ bonnet. It was painted black to try and hide all the n2o and extras, this time we're making the extras stand out with the brighter engine paint.

No huge progress, new pushrods just arrived so will get back to the engine shortly.
Spent a few mins on the gillo, folder and bead roller and a hi vol sump is on the go.

You got sheet metal working stuff - you're gonna regret me knowing that!
Looking good.

Craig,
did you look at any after market sumps ?
are the pipes in the way for sump clearance ?
pretty cool to do that sort of stuff because all i would do is make a mess of it for sure.

Tony, Haha yeah if ya have a ute or sheet metal gear you always have a lot of mates! Lol.
The sheet metal gear belongs to a friend of mine but he only uses it as a hobby now so I have constant access to it whenever required. Let me know if you need something mate.
Steve , no odd clearance issues on this thing so an off the shelf hi vol sump would fit. The only reason im fabbing it is this sump already has the turbo drain and I would have to gut the windage tray out of an aftermarket sump as this has a main cap mounted windage tray. I also could just leave that off and pop a turbo drain in another sump but its been a while since I have made one so I sucked myself in ! Last time i used the hand cranked bead roller was on ally sheet, i can tell you thats easier than beading 1.6mm mild steel sheet,, this guy is going to owe me a lot of beer!!

Now back in its LJ Torana body and home with its happy owner.
Having a small squish area on this build and some changes to cam spec has made it far more responsive to low end tuning and feels nicer to drive off boost. Boost comes on harder and earlier now too with better off boost driveability and way less lag.

Looks good Craig! I'm always impressed with hotrod builds like these- they're way more work than an off the shelf style engine, but in my view the results are more rewarding. Open the bonnet, and they draw a crowd too!
Any cylinder distribution issues with the log style intake?

Paul

Hi Craig,
Had a look at a 202 block recently that had a small compressor type blower and known brand water /meth injection. It run high 12 s in a eh Ute with 5 speed manual transmission. The bores look like pitting and water marks that won't come out, seems like water leakage after engine turned off but he said it only activated on WOT, have you seen that before?, it turned me off using water /meth, also what compression did the lj end up with.

Gday Steve, yes i have seen light staining that looks ugly but does not seem to affect anything, wether that was from a faulty system or not I do not know.
Comp on this is LOW , 7.15 static, although driving it in the off boost area you wouldn't know it was so low, it drives great and doesnt 'feel' laggy at all. CR on the last engine was 7.3 but it had no squish area at all and off boost it was ok but noticably laggy and not so sharp to begin boost. Current cam has softer lash ramps as the old cam, more adv duration I & E , and more .050" duration on the exhaust side. 1 deg less lsa. I went for the longer ramps to control valve train noise. Old cam would be quiet(normal sft sounds) and annoyingly noisey at max temp. Now the valve train noise barley changes, and is much quieter all up. Went with EDM lifters too.
I had a chat to Tony regarding oil pump choice as im not a Holden oil system guru, I was initially going to go std vol, Tony suggested a cut down HV for a little more volume being turbo and edm lifters, I ended up being lazy and fitted a HV pump! I can get the pump out of it easily so may do a cut down HV later, maybe.
Craig.

Gday Tony , yes mate it a friggin handfull, stock brakes (slotted front rotors) so one hard stop and that it !
It would be much better (in my opinion) with an auto, 1st, 2nd and 3rd just happen so quick it there's no time to have 2 hands in the steering wheel when its on boost and you know how messy these things get real fast with stock steering and suspension!!
That said its a good blast to drive for sure.
Craig.
