Long post...What is needed to get this junk into the mid 12’s?

If it's 383 then a 4500 converter would be real nice. It'll drive fine provided the converter is well built, the old days of soggy loose converters are gone, friends street drive 5000-6000 converters around here with no complaints other than fuel consumption!

I believe it is a 357" now (.040" over, 3.48" stroke).

ATI recommended a 8" 4400-ish converter. PTC recommended a 9.5" 4200-4500 convertor. My buddy is worried that the 8" will be much too loose for low speed cruising even though he has a big trans cooler. Would a 9.5" converter have better street manners?

it all depends how the converter is constructed.

I'd go a 9.5", 8" will be a little loose at 4500rpm, 10" will be inneficient.

You should probably talk to 2JM Fab out there by you in Whit Right, they have their own converter shop if I am not mistaken.

I put a 8 in. 4000 stall in my son's car that worked great on the street. Stater number of fins & angle, and clearances determine what will work more than size.

I have 2 x converters
Both custom built 9" 4200
8" 5600 no matter what combination of engine I run my car is always 3 tenths quicker, and it usually is in the 60ft.
Even with the mild combo I have now I am running the 8" converter and I tow a fully equipped box trailer to and from the track 3-4 hr round trip.
I have said it before - big stall converters on the street are awesome

Yes his stuff is pretty well known now days. a lot of the local fast cars come out of this shop and run Freak Show converters and transmissions. http://2jmfab.com/

So my friend ended up with a custom FTI convertor...a tweaked version of their 4000 stall "hard hitting" 9.5" unit. He said it drives no worse at part throttle than the 11" 2400 stall convertor in his truck, but hammer the throttle and it is an entirely new animal now! Traction has become an issue now...where before with his good motor it would dead hook to 11.70's on the slicks, now he has to peddle it quite a bit to get it off the line without spinning the slicks. He got 4 passes during TNT...12.38@116 right off the bat, 12.44@116, then a partially aborted 15.71, followed by a almost idling 19.something He said the track was going to shit as the night went on and the car was getting really sketchy.

He did say that the car seems to have picked up power everywhere over his old, good motor, at least by his SOTP meter. We shall see I guess.

116 is good for mid-11’s....... just need to figure out why it doesn’t hook with slicks.

Pretty much everything The engine was torn completely down and given a proper rebuild. I think everything is listed towards the bottom of page 22, plus the new converter. Plus the 20+ year old flowmaster 3” race mufflers are being replaced with some dynomax 3” straight through ultra flow welded mufflers and it’s getting an x-pipe.

Oh yes a complete revamp. Glad u got it sorted out. Sounds like she quite a bit better now. Its good his budget opened up to get it done.
