Spring Locator Clearances

Post by bigpoppapreston »

Are you all for the most part going with .005 to .010 i.d. radial clearance of the locator from the valve guide? I'm upgrading my springs and noticed that my i.d of my locators were .030" larger than my guides.

I just finished redoing a set of head for a customer that had spring locators that were about .060" larger od than the guides :( Most of that stuff is pretty standard dimensions and if you get the correct spring locators they will just barely go over the guide. Not much sense putting them on there if they are still going to move around. Same thing with retainers that don't fit the springs.

I have noticed some springs that are size for size on the top and .020"/.030"clearance at the bottom [duals only], or size for size top and bottom [ovate only] in the retainers, i make all my custom lower retainers size for size regardless of the spring type, a couple of thou clearance over the guide for the retainer id.

Cheers.
