I would assume the non-catalyzed exhaust fumes would knock a buzzard off a gut wagon

Kinda smacks of cement kilns being used to dispose of all sorts of garbage.

Some chemical/physical properties of ammonia are:
At room temperature, ammonia is a colorless, highly irritating gas with a pungent, suffocating odor.
In pure form, it is known as anhydrous ammonia and is hygroscopic (readily absorbs moisture).
Ammonia has alkaline properties and is corrosive.
Ammonia gas dissolves easily in water to form ammonium hydroxide, a caustic solution and weak base.
Ammonia gas is easily compressed and forms a clear liquid under pressure.
Ammonia is usually shipped as a compressed liquid in steel containers.
Ammonia is not highly flammable, but containers of ammonia may explode when exposed to high heat.
Ammonia is a carrier for hydrogen, as are hydrocarbons. While we do not have a problem with introducing more fuel into the combustion chamber, increasing the amount of oxygen is a persistent problem.

I propose this solution: a blend of ammonia (dissolved in methanol) injected with nitrous oxide.

Think I'd like to observe the first tests from a great distance...

While that would work, I would prefer picric acid. More bang for the buck.

Back in the Depression there were engines that used ammonia as fuel. It was also used in some places during and after WWII.

The main problem seems to be that any leaks can be...unfortunate. That's why residential refrigeration systems quit using ammonia long ago.

Ammonia plus chlorine=hydrazine, and no nitrous needed.

There are other Amines used in fuel. such as PolyEtherAmine. It's primary use is for it's detergent properties, but is there any gains with it considering the hydrogen and oxygen contained in it?

Also according to the study, power gains were higher in the power band, would the percentages needed and in a mixed form be that much trouble? Seems that methanol might see the most benefit...
