The info in the links below looks to have been taken directly from David Vizard's latest Holley book. There's a lot more detail in the DV book itself and I suggest purchasing a copy.

I thought the following Dragzine article might be of help, too, especially if the OP has access to a wideband O2 setup.

I've never been a "set it and forget it" person, for better or worse. I f**k w/ stuff too much and am better off learning how things work myself, even if I end up cutting my own throat on occasion during the learning process. #-o

Bradh

Of course I’ve got questions as I understand certain things and how it changes the performance. I am asking questions because I want to learn more and I will understand it in time . Carb tuning can be a art

I phoned Holley and they told me with no pv front and back don’t square it up try lowering the primary jets 2 to 4 sizes smaller.so now got 90 in secondary and 86 in primary . The guy at Holley told me not to touch the idle air bleeds as they r Calibrated for that carb. I think if all fails
I will go front .063 to .073 and so how that works

Then I bought some new plugs went from ngk7 heat range to a ngk5 as not getting enough up the ground strap

I took marks advice and secondary’s closed up 1 full turn

I’m going to drop timing back from 38-34 and I opened up the primary idle screw and I’ll see how it runs from there. I’ll reset the 4 corner idle. If it doesn’t clean up I’ll close primaries some more and open up the primary’s

At this point I would be afraid of anything Holley tech tells you .... If you are running no PV you want the jets square, and depending on distribution on the track it may even want more in front than back. I've been thru the 950, it doesn't take a lot but needs the adjustments I suggested.

LOL. The very LAST people to call for Holley tech is Holley. Sad but true.

OP you have two of the best carb guys in the country trying to help you. Listen to them.

Quote "don't change the air bleeds...the carb is calibrated for them"!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW...a question for the OP. Why are you NOT using a power valve? Even if it's a drag car, there isn't really a reason to not use one.

It sure seems like these fancy new carbs with all the added adjustability often drive the owners crazy.

A lot different than my trusty old pre-HP 9375, that has nothing adjustable except the float level and jets.

I swapped out the primary metering block with one that accepted a PV, and installed some transfer slot restrictors........ done.
Somewhat handy with a die grinder.

I respect all the advice that I’m getting here
I also am trying to learn in this process and for me knowledge is good. Nothing more satisfying then getting it to work properly by your own hand. I’m not a stupid person , I learn by doing
Some of the advice is I’m not capable of doing and if what I’m trying here doesn’t work I will send it to somebody to fix

3 inches of idle vacuum? So what? I can't imagine anything with an idle vacuum so low. And it doesn't matter anyway.

Put a power valve in there and start with that.

You are going the wrong way.

Mark, can you post the video of power valve opening at idle?

TIA

All the information on choosing a power valve I’ve seen is example 14 inches of vacuum use a 6.5 pv. Basically take the vacuum reading and half it for the power valve. Mine being 3 inches and no pv smaller then 2.5 pv so that’s what I was going to try

My first question is why do you only have 3 inches of vacuum at idle??? I've never seen idle vacuum that low.

That's a good starting point.
