Sbf oil pump for 8000 rpm
So what are people using for an internal oil pump for a wondsor turning 8000+ rpm? I have tried a 10832 and a 10833 melling and they seem to be losing efficiency at 7500 rpm and dropping pressure. Lots of drain back and windage try installed. .003 main and .0028 rods. Lifters are .0018-.002. Any thoughts?

I simply put anti cavitation straight grooves in the gerotor inner and outer parts on the cover end which usually is enough...silver_notch138 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 28, 2019 9:28 am So what are people using for an internal oil pump for a wondsor turning 8000+ rpm? On some, I use two end plates and machine kidney shaped "Shadow Ports" through the first one.
A pump manufacturer should really think hard about making a thicker cover with this already done.
Most of the time it is windage issue within the crankcase and oil pan which over-aerates the oil..

Re: Sbf oil pump for 8000 rpm
What about a larger pickup? I currently run to Milton pick up which is 5/8 of an inch. I see Canton sells a three-quarter inch and seven eights inch
Re: Sbf oil pump for 8000 rpm
Early 90's 7000 rpm 306 due to chassis we ran a stock pan with a high volume pump. The high volume pump would suck the pan dry, seize the pump and snap the pump drive shaft. A stock volume pump at same rpm was fine.

I know your involved with Nascar, but I would bet none of your engines have a 3" main journal like his. I agree that the rod clearance is a little loose though.

Anything you can do which helps the inlet side of the pump will be an improvement.silver_notch138 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 28, 2019 4:24 pm What about a larger pickup? I currently run to Milton pick up which is 5/8 of an inch. I see Canton sells a three-quarter inch and seven eights inch
A fabricated 1" pick-up tube would help, for that matter; as long as the pick-up & screen are not a restricting issue feeding it.

Re: Sbf oil pump for 8000 rpm
cgarb. The OP has not stated what size or configuration his engine is. If it was based on a factory 351W block then it may have 3" mains. Aftermarket block or smaller engine & it may not have 3" mains.
Re: Sbf oil pump for 8000 rpm
True, lots of other critical info was also not stated. Lifter type, engine stroke, even the usage. Hard to guess on those also. That was more or less the point I was getting at was how can we make an assumption on the clearances when we don't know what it is?superpursuit wrote: ↑Wed Aug 28, 2019 10:41 pmcgarb. Gee, dont know of a SBF on the planet I would run .0028 on the rods and .002 on the lifters, but thanks anyway!cgarb wrote: ↑Wed Aug 28, 2019 11:49 pmTrue, lots of other critical info was also not stated. Allot of people start threads about oil control, but don't consider the obvious first.
Re: Sbf oil pump for 8000 rpm
Check how much oil is being pumped upstairs by doing a static test .
If it’s excessive that would be one of the reasons of your oil maladies.
An external pump and vac pump would be beneficial in your situation as well ,although I would not consider those components to be a cure.
You’re very loose on your clearances as well which goes hand in hand with windage issues.

Re: Sbf oil pump for 8000 rpm
Easy folks..., so here’s an update. This is a pro charged 420 ci
Solid aluminum block and has roller 55 mm cam bearings. We run 40 psi a boost through this. So here is what I have found one of the cam brgs in the front of the engine had moved ahead in the block enough to uncover the main gallery a bit. Thus the reason I’m oil pressure drop.
Now I will probably be upgrading your oil system anyway because I know it’s at its limit.
Thanks for the replies

A aluminum block with .003" bearing clearance on the mains ... that has to be about .0045" when running at normal temperature.silver_notch138 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 29, 2019 4:40 pm Easy folks..., so here’s an update. This is a pro charged 420 ci

SO, the front cam bearing actually broke the camshaft retaining plate ...?
55mm roller cam bearings are already wider than the front web on a normal race block.
You better re-think this whole build.

I can't imagine not running a dry sump given the rest of the engine specs.
