I think it's 4m cycles for race, 7m for R&D.

So could we presume that after they have done 4m race cycles they then go into an r d engine for another 3m?

John,
I know 4 m sounds like a high number. But 4m @ 7000 RPM is less than 10 hours. GM when they test their 572 ci I believe tests for 50 hours and everything still needs to be in specs on inspection after the test.

I mean, how else do you get rods that costs thousands of dollars for a few hundred?

Sorry, I didn't mean it in a derogatory way!

:oops:

I lived close enough to Indy that I saw a lot of stuff being sold and wished I had a chevy>
(or they ran Pontiac engines)

:mrgreen:

I did buy a lot of the non-engine specific parts that were sold though.

:)

There used to be a company that specifically sold used NASCAR parts at a very reasonable price, cranks, heads, intakes, rods, exhaust systems parts and piece, cooling systems and shrouds and on and on...

At what average piston speed ?

Good question!?! Lol
I guess average rpm would be 8k, with 9500ish being max.
3.26 stroke, 6.200 rod.........

So 4346 feet per minute at 8000 rpm and 5161 at 9500 rpm.

How much shorter rod/bolt life would you expect at say 1000 feet per minute higher mean piston speed ?
Like in our pulling truck. 3.875 stroke that regularly goes over 9000 rpm and has been 9600 + during pulls ?
9500 for the pulling truck engine is 6135 feet per minute.

I find it hard to believe it'd last to 4m cycles under the conditions it's ran, but it don't have the same rods as you use.
I'd say piston weight and feet per minute are considerations in rod life???

An engine with
S = 3.26"
rpm = 9500
Rod = 6.2"
would result in a mean piston speed of 26.22 m/s, which is slightly higher than the 25 m/s limit
that is often imposed for survival.

It is interesting to note that peak torque is not developed at peak piston speeds.
