Small diesel engine turbo selection help.

I have a little Kubota yard tractor that I found needs just a little more grunt to run my snow blower. It has an 855cc N/A 3 cylinder diesel engine in it. Right now the engine is rated for 15 hp and I was hoping to make closer to 20hp. I’m looking for power from idle to 2600rpm max. I don’t know much about turbo selection and need a little help. I don’t even know where to buy such a small turbo. I know there are knowledgeable individuals on here that could help out. Right now I have removed a couple shims below the injection pump to advance the timing a bit. I’ve also turned up the pump until it smokes. Now I need more air.

I thought about trading the tractor off on a bigger one, but they want so darn much money! I like the tractor as it is very simple with little electronics.

I know it’s not “Speed Talk” worthy, but I don’t know where else to get good reliable information.

Thank you

Sounds like a fun project. I know what you mean you need more power for a snow blower. I often wondered what a Jones cam would do for me in my JD with a 24 hp Kawasawki.

The smallest turbo you can find might not be small enough. Try one of these - not sure if there is anything smaller.

How about the turbo off of a Polaris rzr or the like? Similar engine size

Compound it with a small and larger. Or a shot of N2O when it bogs down to help it spin up.

Then he'll need those big plates with turn buckles to hold it together, like the tractor pullers using 150 psi of boost.

Basically copy what folks have done with the 3 cylinder Yanmar for turbos.

It seems the JD430 lawn tractor might also be a reference for a turbo mod. The JD3038 is a 1.5l yanmar turbo, for reference.

Try looking for a turbo from a snowmobile (400cc-600cc).

There are also tons of crap Chinese turbos on amazon/eBay to tinker with that are cheap enough to justify IMO.

Thank you all for the replies. I just sent Garrett an email.

I’m thinking this might work for me:

The size of the turbine wheel compared to a quarter is something else. Able to support 80HP is even more unbelievable. good luck with the project.

You are possibly right, it maybe too small. After reading the links posted and looking at a few YouTube videos, it seems most people make the same mistake. They all put too big of a turbo on. I don’t want something that doesn’t spool well.

Able to support 80hp, seems off to me as well.
