Help Me Decide Brodix Track 1 or IK200

Post by the rain maker »

Racing season is coming to a close for me & It's getting to be that time of year for an engine freshen up. My current engine combination is:

Small block Chevy 4.040 X 3.75
Jones hydraulic roller 241/251 @50 .562/.540
Air Gap intake
Horsepower Innovations 950 E85
Brodix Track 1 221cc 2.08/1.60
1.75 full length headers
1.76 Powerglide with 5300 converter
5.14 gears
Shift at 6200
High 6.80's 1/8th mile 3040 race weight

I won a $500 Brodix gift certificate and used it to purchase a set a IK200 heads. My question is should I use the IK200 or stick with the Track 1 heads I am currently using? Will the IK's have more air speed and make more power? I realize there are other heads that advertise better flow numbers but these are the only two choices I will be using. I have changed the rear gear from 3.73 to 4.56 to 5.14 and the only thing that has changed is the 60ft and mph, the ET remained the same. Thanks in advance.

Stick with the Track 1's
Sell the IK 200's, and buy some 1.6 or 1.7 rockers.

Thanks for the reply. Rockers on intake or exhaust? Or both?

I went from an old school single plane Victor to a dual plane and picked up .08-.10 in the 1/8th mile. Is a Holley that much better?

Well I thought your combo would be wanting a single plane, and the Holley being the best out of the box.
What happened to the mph when you made the swap? 1/8 mile and 1/4?

In your opening post you mention that shift point is 6200rpm, was this the case when you were using the victor as well?

Thanks, I’m not against trying a single plane again.
MPH dropped from 99.xx to 96.xx 1/8th mile only.

Yes shift point was 6200. I was using a Comp Cams Xtreme Energy at the time 248/254 .562/.580, the Comp Cam made good power but was noisy & fell off sharply around 64-6500. I got with Jones Cams & those problems went away.

Wrong converter or something. No way on gods green earth should any dual plane be quicker or faster than even a decent single plane intake. Ever. Look hard at your chassis and converter.

IMHO , Lowering the shift point to 6200 and going to a dual plane intake were band aids for the problem of the engine falling off at 6400-6500 rpm . Shift point should be more like 6800 to 7000 .The lose of 3 mph in the 1/8 is a good indication of that to me . It should have been just getting close to peak at that point . It could be a valvetrain issue such as lifters , springs ,flex or an ignition issue that was causing problem .You made no mention of those items in the intial post. Dan

I wouldn’t have believed a dual plane was quicker either until I tried it. Converter is custom built 8” & the chassis repeats numbers. It’s won me 4 track champions in as many years.

The 3 mph loss was from rear gear changes not from the intake. You’re right, it probably was in part due to my valvetrain. I don’t have lightweight valves or retainers. The lifters are drop in morel hydraulic rollers. I believe the Comp Xtreme compounded the valvetrain problem. Ignition is your basic MSD 6al, pro billet distributor, etc. FWIW the Jones cam will go 7k without audible valve float. Do you have a recommendation on the heads I have listed in the title?

I'd stick with the track1's .I think the IK200 are not going to show any improvement. Find out whats holding you back from turning the rpms your combo should be running You should not have lost 3mph from gear change . That tells me you lost HP . When I swicthed from 4.56s to 5.13's with my 422 cu.in. sbc I lost no mph. Only got better 60' times and dropped my converter slippage in the 1/8 mie from 20% to just over 10% saw no real difference in trap rpm. I have only rum 1/8 mile tracks. Dan .
