Ref your comment :-
At this point going to purchase new cam & lifters and re-clean the parts, verify clearances and put it back together.

Without the right know-how you could well purchase a cam that would be ill-suited to your 331.
Make sure that whatever you get is on a 108 or 107 LCA. If you do not do that you will give away a lot of torque.

Thanks for the reply David. I have two of your books dating back a few decades and have learned a lot from both.
We replaced the cam with the same Performer RPM that was used before. It's in a 68 Cougar and runs very well in that car.
