SBC 350+.060

Post by 6.50camaro »

This summer I put together a 350 from a basket case long block I bought last summer for the heads (Brodix 10X RI that needs some repair). The engine had dropped a valve and hurt 1 bore . So I had that cylinder sleeved and give the block a fresh .060 over bore . To me the block seemed whether saving as it has had alot of work done to it. (Lifter bores trued and bushed , billet main caps , oil system improvements) . This engine is going to be used as a 7.0 index motor while my 6.50 index motor is out for maintenance and a few upgrades. Any way I'm pleased with the results so far .
1st run off the trailer with a safe base set up was 7.01, next run 6.94 the third run was in a 7.0 index race made some adjustments to the throttle travel limit . Went a little to much and possibly heat soak the carb and intake idling in staging lanes had a 7.07 run.
Engine 4.060 bore x 3.48 stroke
Callies stealth crank
6.0 Carrillo rods
Wiseco ProTru Dome pistons 12.6 to1 CR
UltraDyne solid roller cam
257°@.050 .430 lobe lift intake
265°@.050 .430 lobe lift ex
105 lsa @ 103 c/l
1.5 rockers
Heads are Reed Cam Ported 292 turbo heads 198cc 2.32 sq.in.avg csa 2.28sq.in. pinch
2.055/1.60 Manley SD valves
Lunati 74710 springs
Gm bowtie 10051102 intake manifold
750 Holley DP
1-3/4 x 3" header 12" collector extension
3150 lb 72 Camaro set up for track only .
CalTrac bars 5.13 gears 5300 stall Coan converter
Second time out with car with a better Holley 750 HP went 1.44 60' 6.74 1/8 mile @100.33 then starting tuning to 7.0 index .
I have 3 - 7.0 index races coming up between this weekend and thanksgiving so seeing just how quick it will go will have to wait a bit.
What is the rpm range or potential you think this set up should run. I've been shifting at 6800 rpm till it got settled in .Dan

I'd say you're right in there for performance. A 6.74 at 100.33 mph is strong at 3172 lbs and 360 ci. Shift rpm looks good too.

The cam should peak at 7,300rpm, but I don't think your heads will allow it.

Thanks CamKing , I've never used anything on a 105 lsa and its been 25+ years since playing with a 350 . I realize the heads are a little weak but just using up parts that have been setting around. Dan

It would most likely want a 7500 shift point, you are running the number at 6800 so why run it any higher?

There are 3 , 7.0 index races over the next 5 weekends . So I'm not going to change the way I run till after that. There are a couple test and tune dates after that before the track shuts down for the winter . I just would like to see what this engine will do with some more fine tuning of jetting ,timing ,launch rpm and shift point changes. Won't be making any major changes because as said its running the numbers I wanted easily . Dan

Shift at 6000 and run 7.0 all day. Will last a long time. Maybe 700 passes or more :)

Update, got back to track for a TnT yesterday . Looks like 6800 is the sweet spot for shifting . Made a couple passes shifting higher and et was the same but the 330' times were a couple hunderths slower and got feel the car was laying down . Made some more pases adjusting 2step launch point. Found best 60' and et setting the 2 step at 4000 . Best et for the day 6.81@99.63, 1.47-60'.Dan

Never had much faith in 292 Turbo heads when I ran them, switched over to Bowtie heads that we ported, my car picked right up. Just like everything else, another head comes along to take it's place for more performance.
