Cleveland camshaft thrust plate
I've noticed some wear on the thrust plate on the block side and was thinking of putting a groove in the front cam bearing to help oil the thrust plate between the cam and thrust plate, I know you can buy ones with bearing but is this a mod that's done normally cheers
Re: Cleveland camshaft thrust plate
The oil exiting the bearing lubes the TP. Might be better to grind a small groove in the TP face or the block face for oil retention.

Make sure that small hole not covered by cam bearing it has to be set back a bit.

It isn't but maybe it could go in a little more, I didn't even know that was there so thanks

There should be a little notch in plate to line up with hole also. Your pic looks close to proper distance but you can set back abit more if noticing excess wear.

Re: Cleveland camshaft thrust plate
Two flat surfaces constantly pushed together aren't going to get any lube in there, a notch with a nice radius or de-burred chamfer on the trailing edge will go a long way towards lubing it. That exposed passage dumps a lot & does a good job on the chain but only gets to the thrust when stopped & no pump gear thrust.
Re: Cleveland camshaft thrust plate
Another thing to check is cam gear is not putting excessive pull on cam. No free play. I've never seen any with significant wear other than very high milers.

Re: Cleveland camshaft thrust plate
The Cleveland thrust plate has 2 radiused notches on the block side of the plate(some had notches on both sides to make the plate fit either way but notches on the front sude are not required) where the plate overhangs the block and has the front of the cam riding against it to allow oil to not only lube the cam/plate interface but also to allow oil to then easily flow toward the cam centerline and out around the front of the thrust plate to lube the front face of the plate and then throw off of the rear of the cam gear and on to the timing chain.allencr267 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2019 11:24 am Two flat surfaces constantly pushed together aren't going to get any lube in there, a notch with a nice radius or de-burred chamfer on the trailing edge will go a long way towards lubing it. So ANY oil that exits the exposed hole(which intersects with dizzy pilot oil feed aswell) in front of the cam bearing ABSOLUTELY must lube the block side of the thrust plate as this is its only means of exiting!
The factory cam gear also has a groove cut on the cam contact face and thru its center hole and across its front face where the pump eccentric attaches, this groove allows oil to lube the 2 piece pump eccentric and throw off of the front face of the cam gear to help lube the front side of the timing chain.

How about a .020 drilled hole in the driver side front lifter galley, It also does a great job of oiling the Dist. gear.

Re: Cleveland camshaft thrust plate
Drilling a hole in the LH lifter gallery plug does nothing to spray oil on the dizzy gear.
You would need to drill thru the block at an angle and intersect the gallery behind the plug OR fit a directed spray tube into the front of the gallery/plug to have any chance of extra dizzy gear oil.

Re: Cleveland camshaft thrust plate
The thrust plate on a cleveland or any ford will not have any excess wear. If the oil hole is correctly opened and or the timing chain gear is made correctly and not pulling it forward. Very rarely see wear in this area. The thrust plate is made that it fits only one way so the oil slots Craig mentioned line up.
