Mild perf rebuild valve spring

Post by David Vizard »

Before I get to y question I've had a few folk comment on the lack of postings from me. In short overwork, pounding headaches and severe fatigue took their toll.

Anyway here is my question.
I am looking for a low cost but reliable single coil valve spring w/damper for a mild perf rebuild on SBF heads. I know I used to be able to get one that cost very little and got the job done very well. It was about 400 lbs/inch rate and would handle 0.600 lift. I think it was about 1.25 od and had an installed height of 1.70 to 1.80 inches. I just can't recall where to get this from -- PEP maybe or -----?

Had a few PM with suggestions here. Thanks guys - it looks like I have been pointed in the right direction.

Will let you know what the low down on budget springs for budget builds looks like when I have tested some recommendations on the spring tester.

Howard’s 98214 is a .500 lift spring on the summit link. David said a .600 lift spring

Unless they are really old cast iron SBF heads, the head inner spring seats will require machining for that diameter spring.
Something around 1.410" to 1.480" O.D. would be required to fit onto stock production spring seats.

A Comp Cams #926 is a 410 rate spring and pretty much a drop-in at 1.470" O.D. when using a production type head but, coil binds at about 1.140".

Walter,

Thanks for the info. As it happens I have two sets of heads that need a spring upgrade. One is stock the other set is already machined for a 1.25 spring.

I like the smaller diameter springs as they have less mass and a higher natural resonant frequency.
