SBC 283 forged pistons
Hello Everyone!
I'm selecting parts for a blown 283" low boost aplication. Customer wants forged pistons, should be a flat top 060" over, but I'm having a hard time to find a manufacturer or suplier that still have those to sell
Do you guys know who might have those or problably custom order is the way to go?
Thanks for the help

Re: SBC 283 forged pistons
With the price that I have seen for forged ones in singles even on ebay for instance, you might as well get a custom set made up!

Re: SBC 283 forged pistons
Wiseco has a nice forged 283" piston for about $800 a set.

Yes, I'll confirm what ge said.
Jsut got a fresh set of SBF forged Wiseco's. A bit heavier than 90's KB's forged. They also "Appear" more dense. Said to be great for Power adder too.
They list 3 or 4 different lines/ compression ratio (cc) pistons for the SBF, and I would Guess even more for the SBC. 1.2mm 1. and 2. rings, 2mm(?) oil and skirts have a hard coating.

You'll likely end up needing to contact Autotec/Racetec for custom pistons.

Re: SBC 283 forged pistons
Can you bore it to 4.00" bore or 4.030" or4.060"? If you did that you could use your 3.00" stroke crank, 6.125" rods and 327 pistons from KB/ICON part number IC790, the pistons deck would be at 9.010" so that would be zero deck if everything is perfect (Lol)BrazilianZ28Camaro wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2019 8:51 am Hello Everyone!

Re: SBC 283 forged pistons
Diego, I could find nothing in 0.060" overbore for 283. If you could come up with a standard bore 283 block though...... There is a guy on the HAMB who has 2 sets of Mickey Thompson forged pistons for 283. Both sets are domed pistons, but are likely solid dome that could be machined to flat tops (you'd have to ask). One set is for stock 3.00" stroke and the other is for 3.50" stroker crank. One thought...... You could sleeve a 350 block to 3.875" (std. 283 bore) and offset grind a 3.48" 350 crankshaft to 3.50" for the one set......
283 std. bore......
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/thr ... s.1163263/
283 std. bore with compression height for 3.5" stroke......
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/thr ... s.1109447/
I did find one set of forged flat top pistons for a 307, but they are also for standard bore size. The 307 had 283 bore and 3.25" stroke crank same as 327.
Other than that...... Looks as if you may have to go with a set of custom forged pistons
Good luck with your search,
Harry
P.S. >>> Just a thought...... The 230 inline 6 shares 283 bore size and rod length but has 3.25" stroke same as 327. Maybe you can find 0.060" oversize forged flat top pistons for the Opala there. Then you could run a 327 crankshaft in a 283 block? I am not sure whether the position and angle of valves is the same for the inline 6 but you could always fly cut the 230 pistons in the correct position and angle for V-8?

Re: SBC 283 forged pistons
If it is low boost 10 psi or under and a low cr engine (8.5 or less, then a KB Hyper flat top 283 piston is plenty strong.
Adjust top ring gap as per kb notes.
Spend the money you save on correct setup
Carbs/ timing ....
KB165
Use a 76cc head on it for a 7.50:1 cr. Allows lots of boost without detonation.
No need for rare 283 forged flat tops.

Re: SBC 283 forged pistons
Pursue if the block could go to 4 inches. That would open up some options for you and the extra cubic inches wouldn't hurt either.

The 153 and 230 actually uses the 283 piston , Deck height a bit longer than v motor.
The 250 is close to 307 piston but little bit less in comp height. a 307 piston in a 250 it sits closer to the deck.
283 pistons is mostly cast and some hypereutectic listed here and there.

Re: SBC 283 forged pistons
3.935" is pretty close to 100mm (3.937"). That could open up more possibilities if you're willing to go with an aftermarket rod. Jeep 4.0 I6's also share the same bore size as the 283. Might be some possibilities there, too. (again, aftermarket rod)
Back in the day, 283's were routinely bored to 4.000" as long as the core shift wasn't terrible. Is there any reason you're married to the small bore?

Re: SBC 283 forged pistons
You guys build 'em your way, but experience taught me fifty years ago not to bore a full-race 283" to 4.00". Cylinder wall strength is even more important on a boosted application .Pursue if the block could go to 4 inches. That would open up some options for you and the extra cubic inches wouldn't hurt either.
Old guy story follows, so you young guys can ignore if you choose:
In the early 1960s, I was a high school kid washing parts for Bobby Allison the years he was National Modified Champion. He was running a 301" with Jahns forged 13:1 popups, a Chet Herbert roller cam with the square key stock bar through the oil galleries to keep them aligned and Jackson IR injection. Racing four times a week, Huntsville on Thursday, Midfield on Friday, Montgomery on Saturday and Sunday afternoon at the fairgrounds in Birmingham, eventually the 301" let go one Saturday night. Since Tom Gloor owned the Chevrolet dealership and promoted the Birmingham races, Bobby called Tom, who called his Parts Manager, who met us at the dealership dark-early Sunday morning. He pulled a '61 Corvette short block off the shelf and we installed the cam and top end right there in the dealership and went to the race. With fewer inches, less compression, but better wall strength, the fresh 283" standard bore was as fast as the 301" had been.

Re: SBC 283 forged pistons
Just about any of the high performance piston manufacturers will be able to supply the 283" pistons that you are seeking. CP (my first choice), JE, Wiseco (Race Winning Brands), RaceTech, United Engine & Machine (Icon), etc., etc.
The 3 7/8" + .060" is not a real popular size, therefore whatever you find will very likely be a custom set. Expect to spend $800.00 + for these pistons and of course, it is always a good idea to buy one or two extra pistons when ordering custom pieces.

Re: SBC 283 forged pistons
Thanks, Adriaan! That's pretty much what I was thinking, as well. Will make a note of it, as I may need to make some adjustments to my inline 6 parts combo. Turns out the early 292 block I have is cracked and I will need to find another. Looking for good standard bore block and want to keep overbore as small as possible and cylinder walls as thick as I can. Already have one of the later 12-counterweight cranks to replace the '63-only forged 6-counterweight crank. One piece at a time......chevyfreak wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2019 10:21 am
