? will shop Oven Bake out cash-for-clunkers glue ?

Post by rebelyell »

I understand the CFC/CARS program both began & ended ten years ago 2009.

Will typical auto machine shop Bake Oven remove the Cash-for-Clunkers glue (sodium silicate aka water glass) ?
Iron Block, Iron heads, bearing shells, cam bearings.

Will bake and blast render "glued" iron blocks & heads OK for typical rebuilds ?

The real question is how did you get your hands on such a thing?
Oh, and why?

I'm shocked that any engines from C4C vehicles are even out there as cores. Not only was it ten years ago already, but the junkyards knew what they were buying and they'd scrap the engines right away.

Unless it's something really hard to find, I wouldn't take the risk, myself. Maybe you get it all out of the oil galleries... maybe you get 95% out, and a while after the engine is running, a piece breaks loose and gets to the crank or plugs an oil passage in the head.

No.
sodium silicate is a very brittle like......brazing flux.
hard but brittle, it will just chip off easily.

i assume you will be replacing the bearings and pistons so no need to clean those. You might want to blast the rods, and wire brush the oil passages in the block, but other than that.... just the same as rebuilding any engine.

Sodium Silicate, is very WATER SOLUBLE. In other words, it will not dissolve in oil, but will easily dissolve in water. An old fashioned hot tank (hot water with alkaline) should clean off the silicate, no problem.

I will be interested to see if it will re-desolve.

Q: What was the most positive result of the “Cash for Clunkers”program?
A: It took 95% of the Obama bumper stickers off the road.

If it takes heat to make it solidify, at what temp does that happen?
Would a hot tank be useful or the worst of both worlds? Kind of a chase your tail scenario?

Easy now, keep political in the political section.
I just pasted the joke because I remembered it for some reason.
I do not wish to trigger anyone.

Will it re-dissolve? I was under the impression that it wouldn't, and that's why it was useful for sealing eggs and leaky radiators.

It solidifies when you boil the water out of it. so, boiling.

Yeah my first thought was considering the bazillion things available on the market would it even be worth pursuing? A YouTube search will cover more than you will ever get here.
