The Twisted Path to Power
How did it come to this? I just wanted to squeak out a little more flow from the 1969-vintage ZL1 heads on my period-correct 495" BBC, so off with the port-intruding rocker stud bosses, allegedly good for 15+ CFM. A little thought persuaded me that the cut-down bosses might not play well with a Jones 0.700" net lift roller with 240# seat load springs, so I added Comp stud girdles, which naturally my rare McLaren magnesium valve covers would not clear, thus a pair of 1" spacers join the party, but... now my vintage Edlebrock X-C96 cross ram fouls the covers. It's a lot more replaceable (and weldable) than the valve covers, so off to the mill and on to the welder...

Oh the tangled webs we weave. I am looking forward to seeing this thing done.

.....the question has to be asked......what are those valve covers valued at? Got to be one of the rarer BBC commodities worldwide I would presume.....
Re: The Twisted Path to Power
Why worry about what the heads flow with that crummy flowing intake on there??
None of those old Edelbrock Cross-Rams, either small block or big block, are worth a hoot when it comes to making power.

Re: The Twisted Path to Power
Yeah, dump that intake and go for something truly "period correct."

Re: The Twisted Path to Power
My Can Am engine came with the Lucas/MacKay injection, but I was after a lower profile look and didn't want to view the road through an aluminum forest. (BTW, per the ground-off injector bosses, the cross ram had been converted by its previous owner to Lucas MFI.)
The Edelbrock's bad rep is part of the challenge of making an externally 1970 period-correct combo run like a more modern version. My theory is that the dual plenums of the Edelbrock, Weiand, etc. designs are the issue. David Vizard told me he and Terry Walters spent a week trying to get one to work right on a BBC and gained 100 HP when they gave up and went to a good single plane. However I used the GM single plenum Z28 cross-ram on this car, my '70-1/2 Z-28, with excellent results and the Barton version of the Hemi SP cross-ram is a staple for a nearby specialist's 572" -676" Hemis, some producing in the low four figures NA.
I'm converting it to a single plenum configuration per the mocked-up "balance box" below. If it works, just for intertest I'll A-B it with the crossover passage plugged. If it doesn't, there are dozens of fallback single plane candidates and there's always a market for scrap aluminum

The runners are pretty straight and taper from ~4.4²" down to 3.4²" at the flange so I don't think flow was the problem. (although I wish I'd flowed the heads with it in place.) Fuel distribution may be a different story however..

Bill, if you are anyone is needing old Can Am stuff this looks like a good place to start.
Casey Putsch tours Can Am Cars in St. Louis and shows parts and supplies behind the scenes. This supports some of history's most epic racing cars from Indy 500, NASCAR, Can-Am, and Prototype racing and is where Genius Garage has gotten some of their parts and even a car.

Not sure, but now that BFGoodrich is selling white letter Radial T/As again, Coker Tire's repros have gone from $ridiculous to "slightly less than BFG so we can sell our stock before it goes stale and we have to throw it away"MadBill wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2019 1:09 amSomeone's doing repops for $850 ea.; don't know what that does to the price of originals...
