Re: 1978 454 solid cam, all street..
The OP stated he wanted off idle tq and 18 inches vacuum 236 .050 not going to do either and would be a mess with 2.87 rear gears.
Re: 1978 454 solid cam, all street..
I mis-stated the lift number it is .561, I had 4.10 gear in my car. The 270S comp cam is really nice on the street also if you like a nice solid cam that is not hard on parts. Best was 11.78@112mph, not a lot of HP but a whole lot of torque but was happy considering it was peanut port heads.
Re: 1978 454 solid cam, all street..
I'm thinking these are @.050 numbers right? I'd like to know the whole specs..
Re: 1978 454 solid cam, all street..
Please read me again!!
Up its sorry CR and then install solid lifters on the cam I suggested and go!
I really wish W/P's made a cast-iron head that was a true large oval and only had a 90 or so cc chamber in it so it would be just a head change away from taking these low compression old P/U 454 engines and making them to where a decent cam can be used in them!
Then make some GOOD POWER on the CHEAP! Only real money would be for the set-up heads and a good cam!!

Re: 1978 454 solid cam, all street..
There is nothing wrong with installing a better cam and leaving the compression where it is. There are plenty of 11 and 12 second rides running flat top open chamber big blocks. The OP is not looking to maximize the capability of his engine. His engine will run so much better with a small cam upgrade.
Re: 1978 454 solid cam, all street..
That looks to me to be what the OP wants. Would grinding it with wider LSA improve the idle vacuum? 112~114~~?CamKing wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2020 12:37 pmWhat specs do you want ?

Re: 1978 454 solid cam, all street..
The small cam will make plenty of vacuum on a 110. I have a flat top 7.8:1 454 with a larger 268 hydraulic. It pulls 18-19” at 800 rpm and 16” in gear at 625 rpm.
Re: 1978 454 solid cam, all street..
Like Roadknee said,
Widening the LSA would increase vacuum, but with that short 256/260 Seat Duration, it'll have plenty of vacuum in a 454"
