Exactly. Tim Cole retired in December of 2018, Tim is a personal friend, and ran the racing department at Comp. He referred me to Dave McCarver, who I used in the past for circle track cams. Dave is not as well versed on class racing (drag, Stock and Super Stock) cams as Tim was.
Tim retired a while back...what an incredible resource he was! Also, Chris Padgett who used to be at Comp is now at Bullet. Billy Godbold is still at Comp and his reputation speaks volumes. I had a good experience with Dave at Comp on a recent cam for an NHRA Stock Eliminator engine.
Good Grief !!!! I "Comp" 'd Tim those AMC pistons a good 8 or 9 years ago, I hope he's working on that car. He's been so much help to me ever since I first talked to him. It was good to see you too Alan-neither one of us had any extra time.Alan Roehrich wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 9:28 pmMostly enjoying retirement, I have seen him at the drag strip some. I think he's fooling with his AMC some, slowly pecking away at a return to the track.
Gary Henderson was my source until he retired a few years ago and I retired shortly after. Not many of the old names still there. I have bought from Comp since the early 80's. Gordon was working part time a few years ago, has he retired full time now?Alan Roehrich wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 9:10 pmExactly. Chris Padgitt went from Comp, to Crane, to Bullet.
It was nice to see you at PRI, I ran into Tim as well.
There's a reason why, I don't ask for current cam specs, on any of my cam recommendation forms.prairiehotrodder wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2020 5:02 pm The main tactic that cam tech guys use is to ask what cam you have now, then asking where you want improvement. Top end or bottom end. Then making a cam recomendation off that info. This may have some value but sometimes i would prefer to just hear what the "right" cam would be for the build based on all the other parts of the motor and its intended use.
Does Ed still answer the phone in the afternoon OR has he left us??ProPower engines wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 3:54 pm The mistake guys always make is they want to order a cam when the short block is done and about to get the heads bolted to it.
They want a custom cam but it seems like 99.99% of the time they settle for a shelf stick because they are in the git er done mode and have no patience or time to wait the extra week for a custom.
Personally I use lots of Isky camshafts and have yet to have an issue. Customs take 3-5 days depending on the cam.
Next time call and chat with Ron at Isky. He is only on the phone after 3 pm pacific time but he will take your call of he will call you back and talk to you about what the best options are.
Mike Jones does pretty much only custom stuff. I have also used his cams when required as well. A good option as well.
Seems to be guys just forget about the camshaft and order it last and settle for whats on the shelf somewhere that is not there 1st choice
Ed still talks on the phone once in a while. Seen him about a year ago and he was still going strong then.pdq67 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 11:24 amDoes Ed still answer the phone in the afternoon OR has he left us??ProPower engines wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 3:54 pm The mistake guys always make is they want to order a cam when the short block is done and about to get the heads bolted to it.
