Here we go with another variation of the spray bar nozzle. The design has been around a while, carbs were made with this principle over 100 years ago. Some people are more fortunate than others, and particularly those of us who tinker with carburetors are fortunate gasoline burns over a really wide range of A/F.

Bruce Robertson "Shrinker" (RIP) designed and made a carby of his own design which used the spray bar principle to accomplish the desired degree of vaporization by manipulation of droplet size by means of different discharge hole size in the spray bar. He obviously had this figured out pretty well because race cars and boats were successful with his carby. The guy made a carburetor out of a chunk of wood 2x4 and won some races with it on a 4 cyl. circle track car.

Bruce died in March of 2013. The squamous cell (skin) cancer finally got him. Before he passed he was working on 2.25", 2.375" and 2.5" versions. There is no thing new under the sun, for 120 ++ years lots of carbs used the spray bar discharge design. Bruce's SmartCarby has unique design features in the float bowl, jet location and spray bar design, it is a shame he passed on because we would be using them now if he was still alive.

Does the, "boxy-shaped", Predator carb work this way?

Spray-bars and such??

The Predator is an air valve carb with metering principle similar to a QJet secondary or SU variable venturi carb. Actually, more like the SU in that the air flow area and fuel metering area both change in response to air flow. The Predator's spring loaded air valves open in response to engine air flow and the motion of the air valve also opens the fuel metering valve. The proximity of the valves to the spray bar locates the highest air velocity at the fuel discharge orifices in the side of the bar. The Predator design was inspired by the Holley carb used on B25 bombers and variations of the Rolls Merlin engine in PT boats and on some P51 Mustangs. The Predator has a butterfly throttle valve below the air valve and spray bar, the big aircraft carb doesn't have a butterfly valve, the throttle moves the air valve.

Just wondering out loud here, but given how horrible the aerodynamics are perpendicular to a cylinder I wonder if you could actually see the airflow difference on a flow bench with and without the spray bar installed? Also, if anyone has ever tested an elliptical spray bar, or an even more ideal teardrop shape? Might be a case of the turbulence is "worth it" for better fuel atomization, but since it is before the venturi it where I think you would want maximum stable flow it might not.
