What grit for lifter home.

Post by Krooser »

I want to do a light home job on my SBM before I assemble the short block.

What grit Brush Research flex home would be best... I was thinking 400 or 600.

Just asking, what makes you think it needs honing and what do you expect to accomplish?

When blocks have been through the shot blast process, part of the cleanup is burnishing the raised surface of the lifter bores. The burnishing tool is recommended instead of honing.

The general principle is to eliminate the peaks and make the valleys much deeper.

That means a two step process; coarse followed briefly by very smooth.
Try 150 and then 600.

320 for me. No issues that I know of yet. I use 50/50 cheap 10-30 oil an WD40 for home jobs.

I want to have a hone ready in case I have a sticky lifter or two when I assemble the block...I want then to drop in easily so they will rotate.

This block will just be washed after it's machined... Only had 12 or so laps on it since it was re-freshened after it ate a cam. Long story about heavy oil, cold temps and methanol.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
