Question for Camking
Wanted to ask you which engine oil you recommended to your flat tappet/solid lifter customers for running/breaking in the lobes and lifters. Also what brand and weight oil the people you know use in 850-900 H.P. Dirt Late Model or Sprint Car Engines ? Your comments would be much appreciated, Mark H.
Re: Question for Camking
For all our flat tappet cams, we recommend PennGrade 1 Break-in oil, then switch to PennGrade 1 Partial Synthetic High Performance Oil.
My sprint and dirt latemodel customers run a few different oils, but Driven is probably the most popular.

Re: Question for Camking
On a related note, what do you consider a "safe" over the nose valve spring load during flat tappet break in?
The price of progress is trouble.
Re: Question for Camking
less then 300#

Mike
Do you feel the penngrade 1 is as good as it used to be?
There is some data that they have changed suppliers of base oil and additive package
And what is your max spring pressures for cast core flat tappets?

Re: Question for Camking
I've run 430lb over the nose & it's living.
Carefull break in with inners out & no shims, then another break in cycle with full pressure.
1200rpm idle to keep oil moving.

Re: Question for Camking
Weather Brad Penn base crude has changed or not, i am sure there are a "lot" of people who would like to know for sure. I was told several years ago that Brad Penn......(this name was derived from the words Bradford Pennsylvania) was and or is made from the same vein of crude that the OLD Kendall oil many people believed in and used decades ago. Somebody knows the whole truth on this matter. Mark H.
Re: Question for Camking
I have seen a document that confirms their base oil is not coming from the original oil refinery in Pennsylvania and have also read the the original additive package from lubrizol is discontinuedswampbuggy wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2020 9:27 pm Weather Brad Penn base crude has changed or not, i am sure there are a "lot" of people who would like to know for sure. Maybe there are other oil wells in Pennsylvania and better additive packages

Re: Question for Camking
Every test I have seen, shows it to be the same as it's always been.
We have not seen any issues, since they changed owners. The oil is the same, but it's blended in a different facility now.
You can read all about it here: https://penngrade1.com/wp-content/uploa ... _FINAL.pdf

Please provide a link to this document, because all the testing I have seen contradicts that.

Re: Question for Camking
It depends on rocker ratio, and nose radius on the lobe, but my rule of thumb is, with cast core and iron lifters with oiling hole in the lifter face, you're good to 380#. 380-420# is doable, but you're getting into the danger zone. I recommend tool steel lifters above 380#, for safety. Above 420#, I recommend steel cam and tool steel lifters.

Re: Question for Camking
Thank you Camking for the link on the Penn Grade 1 oil. I read it all and it was reassuring to me, Mark H.
