Windage tray and flat cam lobes?

Post by 65dragster »

Does anyone think using an oil pan with a windage tray on a SBC during break-in on a mild HFT cam will contribute to flat lobes during break-in? Mid-400 lift, 218 duration, 105 spring pressure, using Penn grade break-in oil. Should I really remove or replace my Moroso #20108 oil pan that incorporates windage tray and flat scraper? Everything is properly lubed, zero lash but will go 3/4 turn before initial start up on run in stand.

As long as you rubbed the lobes and lifter faces with assembly oil, and you prime the oil pump before you start the engine, you should be fine.

Another no vote. By the time oil gets to the windage tray, it's very unlikely it will return and do the cam any good.

No, keep it in the motor and use Lucus hot rod brake in additive.
Also if you can only add oil to the motor just before firing it up, but first heat up the oil in your Microwave until it noticeable very warm when you grab the bottle.

I bring my Microwave down into my garage to do this.

No need. He will be fine with the PennGrade1 break-in oil. This is what it's designed for.
