Heavy metal welding
Just got my crankshaft back from balancing and the metal that was installed was not welded to the counterweights looks like just press fit into the hole, should it be welded.

Re: Heavy metal welding
looks like nice work to me . no need for weld if its press fit like that . if your adding weight to radial holes from past balancing then it needs to be welded .

Re: Heavy metal welding
I don't think "welding" fuses with Tungsten/mallory metal.
At best the weld fillet creates a mechanical ridge around the steel hole to retain the Mallory.
The Mallory slug has to be set below the surface, or heavily chamfered.
// Maybe // TIG Bronze actually sticks. Or, maybe not.

Re: Heavy metal welding
You mean the outer edge of the counterweight looks too thin, able to hold in that slug at speed?
I have no experience & no F'ng clue!
////
Cast or forged? Brittle might crack & fall off & let it walk/vibrate out after stretch, while somewhat malliable steel would stretch & loose its press to walk/vibrate out.
Some taps with a punch/socket move it back & forth too easy for your liking?
Some Locktite # & stake that bore's edge with a chisel or inside with a center punch.
Good luck.

Re: Heavy metal welding
No hole balancing like I see there takes some thought, time and math to pull it off.
Don't often see things like that on a budget engine.

Re: Heavy metal welding
If it was assembled with enough press fit, there will be no problems.
An "on-size" fitting needs some kind of other retaining method.

We install hundreds of pieces/year and never weld it, press fit with green Loctite.
Re: Heavy metal welding
Cool thanks really appreciate it I have just seen som crankshaft I even have v-6 crank with 3 or 4 slugs of heavy metal in them and they have welds around them.

That is what it should look like.
Personally put thousands of slugs in PS, FC, TF cranks.

Re: Heavy metal welding
Not the best pic (first counter weight) but $1,100.00 HTC 3.500 SBC crank no weld. Has been 7700 rpm and 7500 @ 800 hp (nitrous) a few times with no issue. Can get a better pic if needed.

Re: Heavy metal welding
I have no problem with balancing a crank like that, looks like a nice job to me and requires no welding if there is a press fit, .001 press with a little locktite will not move, I do like .0015 press but .001 will work.
Re: Heavy metal welding
This is a very serious question. To be honest, I am not so strong in matters that relate to welding. I just remember my father doing it when I was just a kid.
Re: Heavy metal welding
At .0015 press fit no welding required. At .001 or less press fit I tack weld tungsten with tig and chronatron 333T filler rod.

Re: Heavy metal welding
Once again ... No problem when installed axially like that with enough press.

Other than not knowing the press fit, that balance job quality looks excellent. No hesitation at all if it was me.
