Lash caps thickness

Post by Krooser »

Is there a standard thickness for lash caps intended for 11/32 valve stems? Never used them but I may have to as it seems the 5.140 length exhaust valves I need are scarce.

This is on a single shaft SBM.

Thanks.

Mine were .062 thick in the crown and I had to shorten the length because they were contacting the keepers that I was using.

Krooser ... if I remember correctly you are using custom shaft stands on your W2s . Why not mill the stands down to correct your geometry ?

If you check manley specs their + .200 ex valve is 5.165 if I remeber correct and the extra lenght is in the margin of the valves . .050 or .060 margin on the intake and .080 or .090 on the exhaust ,leaving seat to tip length with a few .000" of each other . Dan

Dan,
I have one of those Manley valves on my desk. Never thought about the Xtra length being in the margin...it is plenty beefy.

I guess that's the difference in an old hack screwing something together and a professional looking at it from a different angle.

Thanks.

Far from a professional just a shade tree guy myself. Stumbled across this a couple years ago trying to find out why Manley exhaust valves length dimensions were longer than intakes and other manufacturers were the same length . Dan

I just ordered the valves from my engine machine shop. I could have saved $4.00 per valve by buying from the internet guys but this shop has been great and I like to buy local if possible.

That page in my notebook is dated 1996, which seems like just the other day...

for 11/32 stems:

.060 Bill Mitchell
.080 Sig Erson
.050 Chet Herbert
.080 Comp Cams
.060 Crane
.080 Clay Smith
.050 Crower
.060 Lunati
.060 Ultradyne
.080 Norris
.080 Del West
.080 Manley
.080 Precision Products
.062 Wolverine

Note you can thin lash caps down some on the valve grinder, just make sure you don't get them hot and bugger the heat treat.

Del West said anything over .060'' was considered safe when I asked....
Theirs are much better quality and priced accordingly than most.
(never asked Xceldyne)
We have used thinner and gotten away with it...
