Plasti-gage OUT OF PRODUCTION

Post by n2omike »

I like to double check my measurements with Plasti-gauge... I just went to the parts store to pick some up, and they said Sealed Power quit making it 6 months ago, and I got the last strip they had!

I know a lot of people like to poke fun at it, but I do find it useful. Kind of shocked that it has been discontinued.

Perhaps Sealed Power No longer manufactures plastigage? BUT
Perhaps Mahle Clevite does?

FWIW, Fall 2018 Sealed Power and most of its brethren were acquired by Tenneco.

I'm gonna put mine on ebay, collectors item! I always use it as a double check and I really don't care if anyone wants to make fun of it. Only takes a few minutes, keeps my measurements honest. I have never "caught anything" by doing it, but I was taught the "mike AND plastigauge as a backup" routine by the guy that first taught me when I was a teenager, been doing it that way for forty+ years now, and haven't found any reason to stop. I also still use a snap gauge and mike instead of a dial bore gauge, kind of old fashioned I guess.

Buy it online. I prerfer to DRIVE also, but... Great time to learn how to use the internet. Summit, Jegs, ect

Even if it IS out of production at the moment, there is lots of supply from several brands.

Stockpiling ain't gonna work. Plastigage is a wax thread and dries out from simple age. Using Grampa's left-overs gives a bit different answers than new fresh stuff. Maybe for back-checking street engines....

How do you tell if it's fresh, is it dated or have a use by this date?

couple of google searches yielded that Plastigauge is a registered trademark of Plastigauge Ltd., West Sussex, United Kingdom. Plastigauge was introduced to US retail sales in 1948.[1] And it appears they are still in business in the USA.
