Which intake should I run

Post by Kdub »

I've built a SBC 400 from spare parts around the shop, it's going to be a spare motor for a 2900 pound 1/8th mile car 3500 stall, TH350 and 4:56 rear gear. The motor is a 5.7 rod 11:1 400, 350 horse 327 heads with 1.94 1.60 valves. I don't have the cam card handy but it's a Howards HYD. cam and something very close to 248in 252ex @ .050 .560 lift on a 108. How's that for a mismatch on spare parts...

The intakes I have on hand are:
Offy 360
Offy Port O Sonic (it's like a Victor Jr.)
Performer RPM
Weiand street something single plane

Carbs around the shop are:
Edelbrock
750
600
Carter
625
And maybe enough Holley type parts to put together a 850 double pumper

Tell what you think and thanks in advance.

The street something single plane Wiand would be my choice and 750 Edelbrock; hopefully not the smogger one.

4.56 gears? Use the Port O Sonic and the 750.

Oops, I forgot that I have an Offy 360 high rise 2 four barrel manifold hanging on the wall that might be an option.

Is that the manifold devided in half. 4 cylinders on each side. Have you ever ran that one.

My pick is the Performer rpm with the big Carb due to the 1/8 mile run the car will be making.
The average power numbers will be higher.

How are getting only a 11 to 1 comp with those 327 heads?

Performer RPM with a 1" open spacer and the 750 carb. It will make more power than the single planes everywhere below 5000rpm and will lose max 5hp at peak rpm with such weak heads.

I would go Port-o-sonic or Edelbrock RPM. The RPM will likely do a little better across the entire curve, but with your gear and cam, that Offy, especially if you do a little rubbing on the roof of the plenum beneath the carb, will run great. It's not really a Victor comparison, but they do run well.

The 360 should be trading fodder, the Weiand, I would only consider if it is a Team G.

Carb, 750 all day, although I like Holleys, the Edelbrock should do it.

Yes the single 4 barrel and the two 4 barrel and they always seemed to work well. I've ran the dual quad manifold on a drag car and then again on a 283 in a 3/4 ton truck with two Carter 625's. It seemed to run as well as it did with the stock two barrel. I played around with running them with progressive linkage and linked together and the little motor didn't seem to care.

He said that Offy manifold is an "Offy 360" not a "Port-O-Sonic".

Somehow, I missed that.

Then that Port-O-Sonic is what I might use on that size engine with little heads.
I still think a Weiand "X-celerator" or "Team G" is best if that is what the "early Weiand single-plane" is.

another vote for the Porto-Sonic. Thats a decent manifold, and its a good fit with the rest of the combo.
