What beehives for this cam?

Post by camaro/holland »

Quiet reader mostly, but got a question now. Which beehive spring (mass reduction) would you suggest for this cam/rr combo?

Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 294/302
Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 243/251
Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .560/.565
LSA/ICL: 110/106

Lift will be bumped up with Crower 1.65 RR to:
0.615 on intake
0.622 on exhaust

What installed height?

In the Comp range, 26986, 26918; 26055 & 26095 could have the inst ht adjusted & be possibilities.
Also the 7228 conical springs.

Hyd or solid, flat or roller?
What do cam grinder suggest for spring pressure?

At first glimpse, I think it sounds like cam wants a double spring, on the scale of cam aggressivity...?

Totally agrree lightest spring possible

Tried to prevent bias by mentioning too much details, but this should provide all necessary information:

That is alot of lift for a hydraulic flat tappet lifter! You might get into some lifter ticking and collapse issues with that rocker ratio.

Its not a flat lol

I wouldn’t want a beehive on that depending what cubes and valve size you are putting this in

355 that will turn 7500? Or a 406 that may turn 6200-6500? Big difference. 2.02 valve or 2.125?

What's the installed height? What's the valve weight, or at least a description. The cam card alone helps, but can't get you to a part number

FWIW as an initial WAG I'd be at 150 seat, 400 open likely with a beehive.

It will be in a 383 with 2.02/1.6 valve combination. The valves are standard valves that came with Sportsman II heads installed @ 1.825.

If you have to run that lift a pac 1219 beehive is about the only spring rated that high in lift. It might work

I rather be in a dual spring 1.27-1.29” diam 150-165 lb seat 380-400 open. Maybe even a touch more. Very typical size spring in hyd roller world that works with most things to 6500-7000 depending on lobe

Exactly

My guess is that cam is going to be a bit tougher to keep stable with the 1.65's on it. But I think Manley 221438-16 would keep it happy to 6500 or so. PSI 1516ML is a bad-ass spring as well but expensive.

In a 383, that cam will peak around 6,300rpm. For that RPM, I recommend the PAC 1219X spring

I believe he said world sportsman 2 heads. So that may be correct

I had an afr 195 head with a 230 deg lob and .603 lift that peaked at 6250 and held power to 6600. That cam being 13 deg bigger with a good head i would have expected to go 6600+

That makes sense.
Also, that Comp cam isn't very aggressive.
