Off the cuff, OEM, pistons close to 2 pounds, rods about 1.75 pounds, crank in the 70 to 75 pound range. Heavy stuff.

Thanks mostly wondering what the forged pistons and the pins weighed in grams. No doubt some differences in types of pistons/domes. Easy to find the piston pin was .990 dia. But what was the length.

Been a few years since I’ve balanced, but 850 to 900 grams for piston and pin would be close. (454 grams in a pound)

Lol. So even a stock heavy as hell forged 302 chevy piston really light by comparison.

Of course it is.
If you only want light build a motorcycle engine.

Im trying to take weight off a motorcycle as you speak. It would take changes to the crank and custom pistons. But how about howards 6.5 length ultra billet sbc rod and have light pistons made up to use SBC piston pins.

It is time for you to stop dancing around tell us exactly what it is you want to do.

If you are just throwing things out there to see what sticks you need to stop that. It's an aggravating black hole.

Im leaning torward building a bbc with a factory block somewhere in the .060 over to .090 over with a 3.76 stroke. Would be small by todays builds. Ill use longer rods. I have no doubt sbc rods have been used before not willing to use aluminum rods.

Build it with BB parts and be done with it.
What you think you want is only suitable for a high winding, light weight Comp Eliminator type car. Been there.

Done that in a couple BBC. How much more expensive do custom pistons generally cost. I will use a 22 lb steel flywheel. The howards rods are $830.00 maybe someone like ohio crank could do the crank at some resonable price. Besides the smaller dia. rod pin can a regular forging they start out with be machined for the the narrower big ends of the rods ?

You have done this before?
So why all the wandering questions?
If you are building a high rpm comp engine then the word reasonable does not apply.

No. But if a regular forged crank like a $900 ohio crankshaft could be just machined for the rods and some more charge in cost would do it even if pistons cost me twice as much. Never talked to anyone about custom pistons except for a motorcycle. Seems a comp engine would just use aluminum rods.

What is your RPM goal? It sounds like you are looking for a particular RPM limit, rather than a HP or torque goal. If you want to rev it, then use a good forged 427 crank, scat rods a nice light piston and call Mike for valvetrain parts and recommendations. Put what ever heads you decide on and shift when the light turns on. There you have it. Enjoy.
