Head, intake porting tools

Post by Nut124 »

I need to do some minor porting work on aluminum head, intake.

I do have long, large carbide burrs and a nice 1/4" die grinder. I am looking for long 1/4" shank spiral band drums, like 5" long, 1" drum, for finishing.

What do you use?

Thanks for helping.

Never mind. I did go and check my die grinder. Been two years since I last used it.

It has a nice slim neck that allows at least 5" of reach. That is all I need.

Anyway, what grit is good for finishing aluminum intakes?

60 grit is quite popular, it does not leave it as rough as you would think. Mark H.

I used to buy belt sander belts and tear them into strips to use with slotted mandrels. Sometimes you can find good buys on odd size belts.

Almost the same as Kevin Johnson I take belt sander belts or other coarse sand paper and cut it into a strip and roll it and super glue it together and make my own tootsie rolls.
Turn the speed down on the grinder.
I have made 36 grit and 1500 grit and many in between for different projects not just cylinder heads. I use my regular mandrels.

also prefer 60 grit overall, dont worry about picture pretty just kniocking things down some
Many dont roll them out at all once they get a good feel for the burr. no longer waste time with the bling stuff its meaningless

I find the sanding rolls good for getting walls flatter and you will be surprised when you use a tootsie as a flapper as well it gives a good finish, I struggle with getting ports straight with just a burr but that's just a experience type deal.
The cone shape rolls are good for finishing SSR like on a 23 degree head as I always get a slight flat spot at the apex because it hard to reach correctly, use the cone shape in reverse and you can get a good radius, I final finish with 40 grit on a slotted steel bar at slow speed with a electric drill and inox /wd40 to get a consistent finish.
